Midland Collie Club Ch Show
February 2025

Rough Collies

My big thanks to the Midland Collie Club for giving me the honour of being a judge at the Championship Show on 08th February 2025. It was a fantastic experience and an incredible feeling to judge so many UK Collies, many of whom were excellent specimens of the breed. It was not always easy to pick the winners, there was very little difference in quality between the winners dogs and often it was just one dog looking slightly better than another because it was in better coat condition or was presented better at the time of judging.
My general impressions of the quality of the dogs presented at the show are as follows. Despite the large amount of criticism regarding modern rough collies, which is often fair, but dogs of outstanding quality, as well as dogs that perfectly correspond to the standard in the homeland of the breed exist and such were at this show. Many dogs had good quality heads and a typical breed expression. Many dogs had good bone structure and good physical structure in general. Many dogs were worthily presented both in a stand and in movement. Most dogs had standard quality and structure of coat. There were no nervous, obviously timid dogs at the show, about which one could say that they have serious problems with the nervous system. There were several dogs whose handlers made mistakes in treatment, so these dogs had failures in show of movements or did not have a stable stand. But, having considerable experience in raising and training dogs, I can confidently say that these problems are caused by improper treatment of the dog and are easily eliminated. It is also pleasant to note that only in a couple of dogs I noted missing teeth (not critical, maximum one or two teeth) and only in one dog I noted a narrow lower jaw with a narrow set of canines, but this shortcoming also was not expressed in a critical form. That is, in general, there was a normal, healthy population of dogs at this show.
Disadvantages. A significant part of the dogs are under the average standard height and, in my opinion, there were dogs that were under the minimum standard level, both among males and females. There were dogs with a light bone structure and overly refined in general. I do not like this trend. In the standard of the rough collie in the general characteristics of the breed the first words are - "physical structure on lines of strength and activity ...". I think that the decline in popularity of the rough collie is associated with the tendency of decreasing height in dogs and their excessive refinement, because in this case, for many ordinary people, these dogs lose the majesty and elegance inherent in our breed. On the other hand, dogs above the standard height often have features of coarseness and this is especially visible in the lines of their heads.
If we talk about the weak points of the heads in details, then most often there is an insufficiently strong under jaw and, thus, in profile the wedge becomes sharp, and not blunt, as the standard requires. As for the details of anatomy, the most common problem is an underdeveloped fore chest, and this is the cause of an incredibly common fault - short and straight upper arms. Today, it is almost impossible to find a collie with ideal or close to ideal upper arms. Shortened upper arms and the associated with not enough angles of the upper arm and shoulder blade always lead to a shortened stride of the front limbs and other movement’s defects. Unfortunately, this is a fact that is foolish to ignore.
At the end of my comments I would like to say my deep gratitude to all the exhibitors who showed their dogs at this show. I know that many of them traveled great distances to show their dogs at this show. I apologize to everyone who was not satisfied with the results of their dogs. In the ring I always see only dogs and evaluate them at the moment of showing in the ring. As living animals dogs can look very different in different situations. And that means having different results at another show.

Critiques of dogs.
Baby puppy dog/bitch (3)
1st  -  Congdon’s AAROWELL ANOTHER LOVE High quality puppy bitch of excellent type. Strong bones, strong and elastic ligaments. Well balanced overall. Very pleasing, clean head proportionate to body. Well set, neat ears. Well shaped eyes with soft expression, but slightly small. Well set, correct length neck. Good topline. Well form of ribcage. Strong, parallel limbs with good angulation. Sound movements with excellent drive. Bold, curious, outgoing puppy. Clean, excellent quality blue merle color.

2nd - Hawkins’s BRILYN’S BRECKAMORE CRIMSON EMBERS. 4 and half months old sable puppy bitch. Slightly light bone structure. Head with flat skull and good stop, muzzle not filled out enough. Pleasant expression. Ears slightly heavy. Chest narrow and not yet sufficiently developed, which is the reason for a little bit narrow position of the front legs. Hind legs slightly over-angulated, with slightly turning in hocks. Movements are quite easy. Good temperament.

3rd – Notley & Barnett’s AARONWELL AFTER THE RAINBOW

Veteran dog (76, abs. 2)
1st - Williams’s Ch MEJOLA FATE AND FORTUNE. 8 and half years male in excellent physical form, brilliantly presented. Excellent size and body proportions. Excellent length, arched neck, nice top line and excellent angulations give him a natural elegance and the ability to show dignified stance. The head is of good length and correct shape, clean lateral lines, good stop. The eyes tend to be oval, the tips of the ears pointing slightly outwards. Perfect movements with long stride and excellent drive. He was best mover in the class. Coat of correct texture, careful grooming. Blue merle color is not enough clear in the main tone and the black markings are poorly expressed. Despite the above mentioned shortcomings, his advantages distinguished him from his competitors and for me he was the undisputed winner of the class. Best Veteran male.
2nd – Mills’s LYNMACK STARMAN AT LEMIVEE. 9 years old sable was excellently presented. He is in medium standard size and has moderate strong bones. The head is slightly too refined, of correct shape and clean lines, with pleasant eyes of correct shape. The ears are set slightly wide. The neck is slightly short, the body proportions are very good. The angles of the hindquarters are excellent, strong hocks well let down.  The tail is slightly short. He shows excellent free movements. The coat has a very well structure. Very attractive in all. Res.Best veteran male.
3rd – Boyle’s BARRENGLOUGH HEART OF GOLD
Res  -  Edwards’s STARLENGA HARRY POTTER WITH ELSHAJO
VHC -   Bartram’s  AMBARTR KING OF THE RING

Minor Puppy Dog (5)
1st -  Kelly’s BALLAHANNA BETRAYED 8 months old high quality puppy male in excellent type. Strong bones and well-developed muscles. Balanced head of clean lines, with a flat skull, correct stop and a perfectly rounded muzzle. Dark eyes of good shape. Ears are set perfectly. Neck of good length and set. Limbs are parallel, with strong feet. Upper arms a little bit short, therefore moves with slightly short strides in front. Long tail. Rich coat of good texture, perfectly prepared for the show. The puppy has a great temperament for shows, he is confident in the ring and shows itself well. I am sure that he will a big winner in the future. Best Puppy male.

2nd -  Randall’s LADNAR CALL MY NAME. 6 months old excellent quality, blue merle colored puppy. Very strong bones and excellent physical condition for his age. Masculine head with very well filled muzzle and excellent lower jaw, good stop. Ears slightly wide set. Eyes of correct shape, a little bit small and deep set. Neck of good length. Well-developed ribcage. Strong parallel limbs with moderate angulations. Well balanced, sound movements with strong drive. Dense coat, excellent quality of color. This puppy should also have a great future. I liked him very much. Res.Best Puppy male.
3rd – Lockyer’s GATAJ I AM MAXIMUS
Res  -  Llewellyn’s SALSINA XPLORER’S LEGACY
VHC – Ross’s  SAMSHERNIK MAJESTIC BOY

Puppy Dog (4)
1st  -  Edwards’s & Bluck’s  BELDONES MOJITO. 12 months old sable male with moderate bone. Standard size, excellent breed type, just needs time to fully form. He has excellent form of head, flat skull, good stop, muzzle would be fuller. Excellent shape and placement of dark eyes. Slightly insufficient pigmentation of the eyelids. Well set, correct shape ears. Good of length, arched neck. A little bit narrow chest. Slightly straight upper arms. The croup is long and fairly wide. Good structure of the hindquarters. Movements are free, but the drive should be better. This will come with time, if the dog gets enough exercise. Excellent quality coat, good grooming. Overall, he is a quality and handsome young male.
2nd –  Shipp’s TREMARO SPECIAL AGENT 9 months old sable puppy male. Quite a strong bones, currently slightly small in size, compact body, good coupled.  Balanced head, flat skull, correct stop, well rounded muzzle. Dark eyes set slightly wide. Ears a little bit heavy and set wide. Good of length, arched neck. Excellent top line. Unfortunately chest is narrow, which is the reason that front legs are placed too close together and feet turning outwards. The conformation of the hindquarters is very good. He moves free. Good temperament. Excellent coat and preparation.
3rd – Williams’s ESSANJAY RING OF FIRE
Res  -  Randall’s LADNAR CALL ME MAYBE

Junior Dog (5)
1st – Tipper’s TIGANLEA TURNED TO BLACK 14 months old very attractive tricolor male. His size is at the low level of the standard, but he looks masculine, has good, strong bones, and he is well developed physically. But his strongest side is - the excellent quality head and his fantastic expression, which is especially pleasant to see in a tricolor. He has a good length, strong neck, strong, straight back, a short, slightly raised loin. The limbs are parallel with good angulations. He moves easily and freely with good drive. He is not always disciplined, but it is clearly visible that he has an open, cheerful character. The coat is of excellent quality, but more thorough final preparation is required.
2nd -  McCarte’s ROUGHRIGG RAGS’N’RICHES 12 months old sable male, in medium size, excellent breed type. He has excellent strong bones, elastic ligaments, well-developed muscles. His head is proportionate to the body, masculine, slightly prominent cheekbones. Flat skull, correct stop, well-rounded muzzle, good under jaw. Dark eyes with attentive expression. Well set and well carried ears. His neck is good length and arched. Correct top line. Parallel, strong limbs with good angles. Active, free, sound movements with excellent drive. Best mover in the class. Excellent texture of coat. In allover he is really eye catcher.

Special Yearling dog (6)
1st – Harris’s GEOSAMKA LOVES TO LOVE AT ITHILIEN 15 months old sable male of excellent breed type. Medium-standard size, moderate strong bones, good substance for his age. Good length of body, deep chest, but slightly lacking in forechest. High-quality head without exaggerations, clean lines with a good stop and well-rounded, filled muzzle. Beautiful dark eyes with a sweet, typical for the breed expression. Ears are correct when he is in fully alert. Neck slightly short. Straight and strong back, long croup, correctly set long tail. A little bit straight upper arms, correct angulations of the hindquarters. Free movements with well drive. Coat dense, correct texture. Despite the fact that he is in a transitional age, no longer a puppy, but not yet an adult and this age is not the best for a male, but nevertheless, overall, I found that he corresponds the standard better than others and decided to award him his first CC. Wish success him in future! Hope there will be other judges who will highly appreciate this young handsome, quality male.  CC dog.
2nd -  Port’s MEDLEY OF FLAME DISCO DAVE. 18 months sable male of excellent breed type. Strong bones, very good substance. Masculine, good balanced head. Lovely dark eye and expression. Good placed ears used well. Deep and wide ribcage, broad, strong back. Strong parallel limbs with moderate angulations. Correct set tail. Moves well. Dense coat.
3rd -  Turner’s PAULARA BLAZE OF GLORY
Res. – Toogood’s HANVALE RALPH LAUREN

Maiden dog (2)
1st  -  Shipp’s TREMARO SPECIAL AGENT.
See previous comment in Puppy dog class.
2nd –  Williams’s ESSANJAY RING OF FIRE.  10 months old dark sable male. Strong bones, good standard size, good proportions of body. Classic type of head, flat skull, lacking stop, muzzle should be rounded better. Correct ears. Dark, obliquely set eyes with intelligent expression. Powerful neck, good top line. Front limbs with feet turning outwards. Hind limbs with not enough bent of stifles, slightly high hocks. Moves well. Excellent quality of coat, very nice bright dark sable color.

Novice dog (2)
1st  –  Williams’s ESSANJAY RING OF FIRE.
See previous comment in Maiden dog class.
2nd – Ross’s  SAMSHEMIK MAJESTIC BOY. 8 months old sable youngster. Moderate strong bones. The head is of very good quality, with a flat skull, correct stop and well-formed muzzle. Dark eyes with nice expression. Unfortunately, he has problems with the position of both his front and back legs, which negatively affects his movements. Proper exercises can correct this.

Graduate dog (6, abs.1)
1st -  Mitchell’s & Jordan’s AVONFAIR ALOYSIUS. 19 months old sable male. Excellent standard size, strong bone and good length of body with correct proportions. The head is masculine, of correct shape, well filled and rounded muzzle, good stop, slightly lacking underjaw. Flat and not deep skull, but covered with excess hair, which visually makes skull round and stop too deep. I would trim this hair. Ears are well set. Beautiful, dark eyes with a pleasant expression. Neck of enough length and correct set. Good topline. Sound movements with good drive. Very rich coat, not harsh enough in some areas. Overall, he is outstanding male of interesting type and high quality.
2nd – Farthing’s  DIDEK ONCE IN A BLUE MOON 2 years old blue merle male. He is in medium standard size, moderate strong bones. Good proportions of body. The head is of very good quality, with a well-rounded but slightly sharp muzzle. The skull is flat. Correct stop. Slightly round eyes, ears should be smaller. The neck is elegant. The ribcage is of good form. Slightly short upper arms. The croup is too sloping, the angulations of the hind legs would be better. Moves soundly. Sometimes lifts the tail too high. The coat and color are of excellent quality.
3rd  -  Dawson’s GEMHEID CHESTNUT
Res. – Dodsworth’s LIBANEL EVERLASTING CHARM
VHC -  Gelder’s  LIBANEL EREBUS ETERNAL
Post graduate dog  (4)
1st -  Blake’s CORYDON THE BARON 2 and half years old very attractive, elegant male, in excellent, classic breed type. Moderate strong bones, good substance. In my opinion his size slightly under standard. His head is proportionate to the overall size, very clean lines and correct shape. Dark, almond-shaped eyes are a little bit small and set slightly wide. Very nice, neat ears. Good expression. Well set, neck of enough length, very good topline. Forelegs stands parallel, upper arm are a little bit straight. Hindquarters are slightly over-angulated and hocks turning in in stance and in motion also. Very nice side movements, keeps the topline well. Excellent quality coat masterfully prepared. Beautiful dark sable color. Presentation is also superb.
2nd -  Ross’s SILUTO BLUE WIZZARD AT AMBERWISH  2 years old blue merle male. Moderate strong bones, good length and proportions of body. His head is very nice. Flat skull, correct stop, well moulded muzzle. Nice eyes and expression. Fair length neck, good form of chest. Correct angulations of front and hind limbs. Hocks turning in. Movements are not completely free. The coat is of good quality, but requires more careful preparation.
3rd  -  Dix’s BARRENGLOUGH DIAMOND SKIES
Res.   Penachio’s MALOUINES NEVER ENDING STORY
Mid Limit dog (6)
1st -  Blaikie’s  KOURIKA THE GIGOLO. 2 and half years blue merle male. Excellent standard size, strong in bones, masculine, but without traces of coarseness or any exaggerations. Very nice head, clean side lines. Correct stop. Nose drops off very slightly. Beautiful eyes with a pleasant expression. Ears set slightly wide. When fully alert, the ears assume the correct shape and position. Body of good length, deep chest, straight back, keep nice top line during the movements. Enough lenght of neck. Normal position of limbs. Moves soundly, but he did not like one place in the ring, he slowed down there and of course the impression of the movements was not the best. Very beautiful color and good coat structure. In general, he is outstanding male in type and quality, presented in excellent show condition. Res.CC dog.
2nd  -  Tipper’s TIGANLEA THUMBS UP 3 years old dark-sable male. Excellent example of modern type of rough collie. Not a big dog, but still on standard level, strong in bones, compact body, well coupled in loin. Beautiful masculine head with flat skull, correct stop and well moulded muzzle. Lovely dark eyes with quick, alert look. Ears always are on a top. Powerful neck, straight back, springy loin. The tail set correctly, but during the movements sometimes was slightly curling. Slightly short and straight upper arms, a little bit weak pasterns. Good construction of hindquarters. Moves soundly with excellent drive. Coat of excellent texture. Active and very friendly.
3rd –  Collins’s TRIBURLE THE JOKER
Res. -  Welsh’s THISTLEWING SMOKY QUARTS
VHC  - Leese’s  ESSANJAY FIELDS OF GOLD FOR FIRESAGA

Limit dog (5)
1st -  Hassoks’s CAMANNA CELLMATE. 2 years old sable male. Excellent size, towards the upper level of the standard, strong bones, very masculine, with excellent substance. The head is proportionate to the overall size, of excellent type and quality. Flat skull, clean side lines, well-formed muzzle and under jaw. Very beautiful, correctly shaped eyes. Well set ears. Soft and at the same time masculine expression. Neck of enough length. Broad and deep chest. Limbs stand and move correctly, with moderate angles. Tail a little bit short. Movement should be more active. A little lacking in drive. Beautiful coat, correct structure.
2nd  -  May’s CAMANNA CAREERCHANGEING FOR MAQUEEBA. 5 and half years old sable male. Another very masculine male, strong in bones. His head is in excellent type and quality, clean wedge shape, correct stop. But head looks slightly small to his overall size and body. His construction is correct, strong, well placing and well angulated limbs. Moves soundly. His tail is a little bit short. Nice coat, bright dark sable color.
3rd -  Cronk’s CHELBORN’S GAMBLING LIST
Res.  -  Chaplin’s TAKHISIS LYSANDER
VHC  -  Williams’s PHREELANCER PHEDERAL AGENT AT MEJOLA

Open dog (8,  1 abs)
1st -  Wall’s DALIYHAA MASTER CRAFTSMAN. 2 and half years old tricolor male. Excellent standard size, strong in bones, excellent proportions of the body. Strong and elegant male. A very serious contender for CC. The head is proportional to the overall size, correct length, clean lines, stop is slightly elongated, well moulded muzzle and underjaw. The eyes are medium size, dark with an intelligent expression. The ears are well set. Neck of fair length. The chest is well form. The limbs are strong and parallel. But it is desirable to have a better length of upper arms in the front limbs and a more pronounced angles of the stiffles, as well as lower hocks in the hind limbs. Harmonious movements, with a good drive. The dog is superbly trained and impeccably shows itself in the ring. The coat is of excellent structure and is maximum well prepared, but ... on the day of the show there is not enough rich hair on mane and frill and feathers and on under line of the body. For a large dog of tricolor color this is especially important. Overall he is high quality dog and if I had met him in full coat his result would have been more than the class winner.
2nd -  Lockyer’s CH GATAI TURN BACK TIME 2 and half years old sable male. Another high quality dog of different type. Moderate strong in bones, good proportions of body, presented in excellent physical condition. Excellent type and quality of head, flat skull, correct stop, a little bit lacking under jaw. Beautiful dark eye, sweet expression. Fair length of neck. Good top line. Slightly short upper arms. Good construction of hindquarters. Moved soundly. Excellent coat.

2nd  -  Dawson’s GEMHEID CHESTNUT 3 years old dark sable male. Good standard size, moderately strong bone, good length of body. Head proportionate to size. Domed skull, rather deep stop, not enough rounded muzzle. Eyes set wide apart, a little bit lacking pigment of eyelid rims. Ears set correctly. Good length of neck, correct topline. Deep chest. Very nice construction of hindquarters. Moves soundly, excellent drive. Beautiful coat, correct structure. I really like this type of bitch. She was a strong contender for CC. The head is proportional to the overall size, correct length, clean lines, correct stop, well rounded muzzle, slightly lacking under jaw. Lovely eyes, sweet expression. The ears are well set and carrier. Neck of fair length. The limbs are strong and parallel. But it is desirable to have a better length of upper arms  and a more pronounced angles. Hindquarters good build. Movements are free and easy, slightly short stride of front. She is superbly trained and impeccably shows herself in the ring. The coat is of excellent structure and excellent prepared. Res.CC bitch.
2nd -  Tipper’s REVDVICKI RUBY TUESDAY AT TIGANLEA 4 years old sable female. Another high quality bitch, which I liked very much. Strong bones, excellent substance and physical condition, good proportions of body. Excellent type and quality of head, flat skull, correct stop, excellent filled muzzle. Beautiful dark eye, sweet expression. Fair length of neck. Good top line. Good construction of hindquarters. Moved soundly. Excellent coat. She could have won the whole show, but she refused to show herself off beautifully in the standing.
3rd -     Williams’s CH MEJOLA MAIN EVENT
Res.  -  Brooker’s CH PARIS VENISE DU BOIS DES AMAYONES FOR CORISIAN

2nd  -  Bartram’s AMBART’R DIGNITY AND PRIDE 8 months old dark sable female. She is big girl, her size is on the upper level of the standard.  Moderately strong bone, good length of body. Head proportionate to size, showing a wedge shape, but is hard cut and strong in lines. Eyes are slightly oval shape, set wide. Well set ears. For me her expression is a little bit sad.  Good length of neck, correct topline. Deep chest and wide. Good angulations of fore and hind limbs. Movements are slightly heavy in elbows. Good coat and grooming.
3rd  -  Bartram’s AMBARTR WRITTEN IN THE STARS

With respect to all.
