Rough Collie Dogs

I would like to thank the officers and committee for inviting me to judge at this well run show and for the hospitality shown toward me. Without an exception dogs were clean and well presented and I’d like to thank exhibitors for the efforts made in preparing their dogs.

Whilst the number of males present was following the current trends I was happy overall with my line up.  We are asked by the RKC to comment on key breed watch points and in the main I felt very encouraged as I handled very few dogs with overly small or deep set eyes and undejaws and mouths also seemed to present with very few issues. Cow hocks are still in evidence but whilst a number didn’t stand true most corrected on the move although drive could be improved on. My overall priority was to award what were in my opinion the best balanced dogs throughout with no extremes with an emphasis on being able to move true and with drive.

1st Lockyer’s Gataj Time Will Tell 7 mth sable and white.
Standing and showing well. Appearing well balanced with good angulation. Head planes are promising with good ear set. I would prefer a larger eye. Well off for bone and presented well. Was settled on the move
2nd Scott’s Lynmead Designed with Love for Chantique. His head is coming on well with a lovely eye size and ears are placed well but need to settle. I did prefer his head pattern to 1. Angulation was promising but he appears to have had a height growth spurt with length yet to catch up. He wasn't as settled on the move as 1.

Puppy dog (1,0)
1st Randall’s Ladnar Call My Name, stood alone but frankly I think it would take a lot to get past this chap. Very settled temperament. Beautiful head piece fitting the standard with parallel planes, smashing fill of muzzle, oblique almond dark eye with an appealing expression. Body in good condition, well off for bone, angulation front and read with turn of stifle, good tail length, carried well.  Was steady and true on the move with good rear drive and stood true. BPD and awarded BPIB in agreement with my co-judge and thrilled to see him go BPIS

Junior Dog (2,2)
1st McCarte’s Roughrigg Rags’n’riches. Sable and white masculine boy with a lot to commend him. Head handled well with a good underjaw and rounded blunt muzzle, good earset and an almond eye of good size and set giving a smashing expression overall. Stop was bang on but deeper than some here today. Good angulation to the front with plenty of heart room and spring of rib, a good turn of stifle and one here today with a better length of tail. On the move he also produced more drive on the rear than many here today. Seriously considered him in the Challenge.
2nd Radford-House and Durrant’s  Ingledene Spirit of legend for Fivejays.  A jet black tri longer in type than one in head patterns and overall shape. His stop was bang on with enough fill to foreface and balance with his back skull showing no coarseness. Ears were placed well but one having a tendency to fly. Angulation to the front was good with a good reach of neck. Tail was of a very good length.  However he was sporting an eye issue to one eye and gave his handler a tough time on the move making it tricky to assess to his movement overall.

1st  Randall’s Ladnar Call me Maybe
Litter brother to puppy dog winner and he’s slower to mature. His head properties are promising  with a balance between skull and foreface and lovely rounded blunt muzzle, good eye set and pleasing shape. Stop bang on. Ears could be just a tad tighter. Front angulation is good. I'd like more length to his back and he’s a little high over the rump at the moment. Good tail length. Moved ok.

1st Page’s Lynmead Prince Charming and I thought he was. This chap presented with no extremes. Head handled well, really well balanced with no flare to the back skull, well placed stop and good ear set giving him an alert keen but kind expression. His angulation front and back was very good.  Neck lines into the shoulder sitting very well. He had an appropriate rise over the croup and pleasing angulation to the rear with a good turn of stifle and well muscled. I would have preferred a couple more cms on his tail length.  He moved out as one of the consistently best movers today keeping a great top line and sound effortless momentum on the rear. Poetry on the move.  Won the RCC for his balance throughout, shape, appeal of expression and overall soundness on the move. 
2nd  Brooker’s Starlenga All about Majic for Corisian. Stockier shaded sable dog in tip top condition. Lovely eye set and well placed stop, which was a tad deeper than 1. Very good rounded blunt muzzle with good underjaw. Angulation was spot on. I just preferred the movement of 1.
3rd Lockyer’s Gataj Perfect Timing

1st Turner’s Paulara Blaze of Glory, an upstanding masculine boy. Appealing expression with obliquely set almond eyes. Head planes were correct with no coarseness and stop looking deeper than it is, due to the profuse skull hair. Would have liked his ears a tad tighter. His overall shape was pleasing with good angulation to the front and neck flowing into a good shoulder set, length of back, spring of rib and chest room were all good. Nice turn of strife and the tightest of feet and a tail of a good length. In the class he moved out well with drive but in the challenge he appeared to move with less purpose, 
2nd Rowlinson’s Hanvale Alexander McQueen. Another rather nicely put together dog. I particularly liked his eye set again, not as deep as it looked due to skull hair and he had good ear set. Angulation to the front was very pleasing, preferred rear angulation of 1 and length of back. Stood well and moved out with purpose but felt action was a little close on the rear.
3rd Dawson’s Gemheid Chestnut

MLD (4,1)

1st Collin’s Tribule the Joker. Very pleasing sable and white in lovely condition. His head handled well with no coarseness, well placed stop and ears and good eye set and shape which were smaller than some here but not to the extreme. His angulation to the front was super with a good length of loin and well off for bone throughout. I would have preferred a little more rise over the croup but on the move his top line remained true.
2nd Skinner’s Ladnar Makeithappen for Nikal. A blue merle rather well put together dog with no extremes. His head was a good clean wedge, flat skull, spot on stop, eyeset and shape good but a slight reluctance to pull his ears up. He had the classic proportions and angulation expected of a Rough Collie with a good balance of height to length. He can move well keeping a good top line and showing drive but has a tendency to get a bit giddy and it was clear this chap has got a lot of character and zest for life.

1st Skinner’s L. Makeithappen For Nikal 2nd in midlimit dog
2. Beaden’s Myriehewe London Calling. A refined tricolour boy showing no extremes and     nicely put together. He was of a longer type throughout. His head showed no coarseness, perceptible stop, flattest of skulls, good eye set and ear carriage. I would have preferred just a little more fill to the muzzle. His good angulation was evident in his movement with a smashing reach achieved due to the correctness of his proportions of height to length ratio. Would have preferred him to have a little more body.

1st Growcott’s Lillyway Legacy. Really appealing masculine Tricolour dog presented beautifully. Head was pleasing to handle with a lovely rounded blunted muzzle and firmest of underjaws. Stop was well placed and no coarseness present in his back skull. Eye was a good size and shape and expressive. Ears were placed well. Angulation was good front and back, Rear angulation was a real strength with no sign of cow hocks, standing or moving and rear drive was superb and he really powered around the ring, keeping his top line throughout. No dog is ever perfect and I would have liked a cm or 2 more length to his tail but it was set and carried well. In considering the overall balance and appeal of this chap and his clear strength and drive on the move I felt he was well worthy of the CC today.
2nd May’s Camanna Careerchangeing for Maqueeba. A very nice shaded sable dog who I seriously considered for the RCC. He has the calmest of temperaments in the ring. He is eye-catching due to his size and overall shape and balance. His head handled well with no coarseness, well placed stop, nice fill to muzzle and ear carriage eye shape and size is good I would have preferred his eye to be set a little more obliquely. He didn’t disappoint on the move, his shape and angulation suggested he would move with appropriate gait and length of stride and he did.

1st Page’s Lynmead Amalie Let Me Go, Appealing shaded sable dog. Some lessons on movement could be learnt from watching this 12 year old boy strutting his stuff. He has shape and balance throughout, his head was masculine but no sign of coarseness, well placed stop and super almond eyes set well, ears set correctly and used well presenting an honest alert and intelligent expression.  Good top line and good length of back rising slightly over the croup. Stood and moved true to the rear keeping his top line. Unlucky to meet the veteran bitch, both are credits to their owners and breeders and the only deciding factor for us was based on age related changes in the mouth, which generally is very acceptable looking in a 12 year olds mouth. Today we had to split hairs to select our best veteran in breed as they were both such super Roughs.
