CITY OF BIRMINGHAM CH SHOW
ROUGH COLLIES

I would like to thank the exhibitors who took time out to present their collies and to the committee  and stewards who put on an excellent show with good size rings. This year is my 50th year in collies and i am sorry to say it is  a breed heading for trouble. All this year we have seen very few youngsters being shown and it is these youngsters  that are our future. Unless more people start to breed their own stock instead of buying in, then not only will any knowledge of the breeding be lost but also there will be very few quality collies to breed from. We are losing so many good points particularly head and eye qualities, and will not be able to get these back as time goes on. In many ways i was lucky when i started because i did not have the internet or all the hype that comes with social media. We actually had to visit breeders and see if their collies were as good as the publicity. Even in those days it was not always the case . This is not a hobby you can be successful in behind a keyboard. You have to actually go and gain practical experience . Viewing other breeders and litters in their home  can be so interesting. Most love to talk about their dogs and you can pick up a wealth of knowledge at the same time.
SPECIAL BEGINNERS DOG (3)
1st Boyle's  BARRENCLOUGH HEART OF GOLD
s/w In good coat and condition.Pleasing head properties . Correct eye and expression. Good reach of neck and body. Moved and presented himself well
2nd Leese's ESSANJAY FIELDS of GOLD for FIRESAGA
Over all a larger dog but some what stronger in head than one and not the cleaness in skull. Would prefer a better shaped eye . Good length of body .Standing presented well. Could be more positive on the move.
3rd GELDER'S LIBANEL EREBUS  ETERNAL LOVE

VETERAN DOG (3)
1st William's  CH MEJOLA FATE and FORTUNE
I judged this lad a few years back and he won a Limit class for me then. Upstanding merle who was born showman . Although I would prefer a better head on him it is not too difficult to see why he became a CH when you take his body conformation and his true movement into account. Now a veteran he still maintains this some thing that was lacking in a lot of the younger exhibits.
2nd Shipp's    CH NO MORE HEROES Du Clos De SEAWIND
S/W   Again I first judged him a few years back and he showed his promise then. Very nice clean head , correctly placed stop and nice eye and expression. Good depth and length of body . You judge what you see on the day and today i felt he could have put more in on the move.
3rd Boyle's BARRENCLOUGH HEART OF GOLD

JUNIOR DOG 5 (1)ab
1st Randall's LADNAR CALL MY NAME
Res CC
The first thing that hits you on seeing this bluemerle is the correct colour and well marbled. His head is so clean with no exaggerations , correctly placed stop and good skull. Correct eye in colour, shape  and placement, good ear carriage giving a masculine expression. He is the correct  size for a male. He moves well from the rear , perhaps could be more positive in front but his other qualities out way this.
2nd Blake's CORYDON THE BARONET
Tricolour who excells on the move and so he should . Correct shoulder which shows on the move.Drives well from the rear and presents himself well . His head is clean with no exaggerations and pleasing eye and good ear carriage. I would prefer that he was more masculine and up to size. However a very close  thing between 1st & 2nd.
3rd Lockyer's GATAJ TIME WILL TELL

YEARLING DOG 1 (1)abs

GRADUATE DOG 2
1st  CORYDON THE BARONET
2nd Brooker's STARLENGA ALL ABOUT MAJIC for CORISIAN
S/w presented in excellent coat and condition. Standing presents a very nice picture . However although he has a pretty eye it was more forward looking than the obliquely set which is required by the standard. His head is very clean wedge with no exaggerations around the cheeks . I felt he could have put more in on the move which was rather erratic today.

POST GRADUATE DOG 7 (1) abs
1st Mitchell& Jordan's AVONFAIR ALOYSIUS
Gold s/w in superb coat and condition. Very nice head properties, clean and correctly placed stop, good ear carriage, pleasing eye and expression. Good reach of neck and bodyshape. Moved well. Presented himself well and all credit to his handler who must have put in a lot of work  because he was groomed to perfection.
2nd Toogood's HANVALE RALPH LAUREN
S/w Pleasing head ,clean with no exaggerations. Good reach of neck and overall body shape. Moved feely . Not in the condition of !st .
3rd Ross's BLUE WIZZARD at AMBERWISH

LIMIT DOG 7 (1ab)
1st Hassock's CAMMANA CELLMATE
CC DOG
S/w at 2 and half years old, now coming into his own I had to do a double take when I saw this dog today. Having seen him so many times in the ring behaving like a teenage  boy  just let out from school. Today he was totally different and all credit to his handler for handling him so well. To some who have not seen the likes of him before he would not have looked out of the place in the 80,s when the breed was in its pomp .  Lets look at his attributes . He is a good size and a proper male , well boned with good chest ,spring of rib , nice turn of stifle , good hocks and neat feet. Presented in good coat . Then take a good look at his head properties, clean wedge ,good muzzle and underjaw , correct well placed stop and flat skull. Correct ear carriage and correct shaped dark eye set correctly giving a masculine expression. All things which we are losing in the breed . Certainly size , correct  eye shape and placement. For those of you who are interested take a look some of  the photo's in the book Collies of distinction and compare them with a lot of the  collies we have today. He did enough on the move today thanks to his handler
2nd Waterhouse's LYNMEAD ROYAL LOVER
S/w presented in excellent coat and condition. Pleasing head properties with rounded muzzle and good skull. Not the easiest of showman but when he does use his ears he has a pleasing expression. No where in the standard does it say Must stand like a statue. Many a good dog is passed over when they do not. Good reach of neck and overall conformation. He moved freely both front and rear .I just prefered the eye set on my cc and Res cc which was my deciding factor today .
