COLLIE ROUGH

I am so grateful  to The National to have been given this first opportunity to award CCs & to the breed for its thorough education, not least under Duna Jones’ watchful eye, despite me being known principally as “a toy dog man”. I do judge the Pastoral Group plus a dozen of its CC breeds. Started judging the breed in 2000. No JDP Credit. Collie Assoc breed seminar in 2010 and Rough Collie Breed Council  seminar in 2012.  Nth of Scotland sub-Group show in 2019.  A3 Listed by the Breed Council ‘24. Needed a minimum of 120 hands on. I had 243. I  hope that the JDP will evolve without ever losing sight of the learning value of actual, not virtual, “hands on”.  Appreciated that some 109 actual exhibits entered with just 17 away, 7 males and 10 females. I found no significant Category 2 issues but did, unexpectedly, find short tails somewhat prevalent. I was looking for those that had the appearance of working capabiliy, that moved accordingly and hence that were slightly long as compared with their height & with no suggestion of cloddiness. Thanks are due to our stewards Fay Hutchings and Julia  Russell for keeping us all on our toes! 

SBD (3) 1 Dix,  Barrenclough Diamond Skies,  quality s/w of 5yrs built on such lovely lines,  nice, clean, expressive headpiece,  excellent shape framed by dense coat,  easy mover who gaited well. Best SBIB. 2 Boyle,  Barrenclough Heart Of Gold JW,  7yrs veteran s/w sharing the same prefix but different in type plus some 2yrs older,  thicker in skull & heavier in build but so well put together in an excellent coat that was very well turned out.  3 Walton, Sassari Smudge 

MPD (2 ) 1 Scott, & Scott, Lynmead Written In The Stars For Chantique,  6m s/w out of a Dutch import,  lots of promise,  expressive, well placed, ears,  very shapely,  loved how he just flowed along with a light & balanced stride.  2 Lockyer, Gataj Time Will Tell,  also 6m s/w & with a sire imported from Belgium,  a touch less secure in these surroundings that is no fault & experience should address,  so very typy in all respects with such good angulation fore & aft,  truly promising & well named. 

PD (7,2) What a quality quintet 1 Randall, Ladnar Call My Name,  11m b/m,  so classy as to fill the eye & with all his virtues confirmed “hands on “,  expressive head  had taper with slight stop & parallels,  breed specific front as confirmed on the move,  shapely,  outer coat of harsh texture with clarity of colour,  surely destined for some significant winning if he simply continues on these lines.  2 Blake, Corydon The Baronet,   rising 12m tri with excellent head properties & an expressive oblique eye,  loved his shape & angles,  slight rise over his loin,  certainly not fully coated but it both fitted his outline & was richly marked,  had an easy stride,  another with the potential to have a successful adulthood.  3 Melonie, Wisewyn Lake Field Lasting Glory (imp Prt) 

JD (6,3) 1 Foy, Beldones Ivory Star,  rising 15m s/w,  my judging book begins “class act”,  fabulous breed type coupled with conformation & development beyond his youth,  expressive head with oblique almond eye & well placed  & used ear,  arch to neck of good length,  so well angulated,  excellent to go over with nothing worth quibbling about,  muscled rear, moving on ex feet off a firm hock,  gd coat & tail,  shown to advantage he moved typically & effortlessly with a long stride,  repeated all this in the challenge to annex Reserve Dog CC,  good luck with him for his title as I understand he is on 2xCCs 2 Williams, Essanjay Ring Of Fire,  just 13m dark s/w,  just not quite as “finished” being barely out of puppy,  what an excellent head giving a clean wedge with gradual taper,  excelled in eye & ear,  deep chest,  correct bodylength,  good overall structure,  easy mover albeit with that teenage male “proud” tail carriage! Plenty of promise.  3 Melonie, Wisewyn Eternal Life(Imp, Prt) 

YD (7) 1 Williams, Mejola Top Gun JW,  22m s/w,  so handsome w/o any coarseness,  textbook eye & ear,  well rounded blunt muzzle with strong jaw,  well formed front,  has depth,  shapely body through to correct degree of croup,  correctly coated,  moved so sound & stylish,  certainly one to watch.  2 McCarte, Roughrigg Rags’n’riches,  rising 16m, Ch sired, s/w giving plenty of age away,  a tad deeper in stop,  excelled in skull, eye & ear,  really nice type with a firm, well angulated, rear & a good, sound, backend,  teenager with plenty to like,  promising.  3 E Ring Of Fire

ND (1) 1 E Ring Of Fire GD (3) 1 Gelder, Libanel Erebus Eternal,  recently turned 3yrs tri,  felt he was fine enough in muzzle with a relatively deep stop & width in earset,  maybe not the showiest but so very well bodied with some breadth behind his shoulders, well sprung rib & depth,  excellent hindquarters,  well let down hock,  quality coat of correct density & colour type,  moved absolutely sound,  plenty of positives to move him up the ranks. 

PGD (8,1) 1 Crawford, Stregato Foolish Guy For Delseirios,  3yrs 4m s/w shown under an ATC Number,  so much to like being of such ex breed type,  cleanly headed with excellent features,  very shapely,  breed specific front,  absolute soundness with good tail carriage & some length of stride,  should readily be moving up the ranks as proven in the v next class. 2 Ross, Siluto Blue Wizzard At Amberwish,  2.5yrs b/m,  plenty of class about him,  such a lovely head & eye,  well constructed body has depth & rib,  correct in croup,  excellent coat quality with clarity of colour,  did have a  tendency to hook his tail carriage in his enthusiasm,  should be onwards & upwards. 3 Cooper, Kelekona Hearts Of Gold JW 

LD (11) 1 Williams, Phreelancer Phederal Agent At Mejola,  rising 4yrs tri,  flat skull,  taper to blunt & well rounded muzzle,  parallel planes,  expressive eye & ear,  so shapely as set off by his well arched neck,  breed typical front,  soundest of rears that gave plenty of drive,  richly marked coat fitted his stylish outline,  rated him as of Ch quality.  2 Chaplin, Takhisis Lysander,  this s/w was also rising 4yrs with just a fortnight between them,  fabulous eye & ear,  excellent conformation & so stylish,  scores in his rib & depth through to correct degree of croup,  his coat complemented his shape,  strode out well with an easy length of stride,  pleased to also rate him as of Ch quality  3 S Foolish Guy For D 

OD (10,1) A privilege to judge such a competitive class with 3xChs present 1 Blake, Corydon Christopher,  2.5yrs s/w,  here stood all I was looking to find & filled my minds eye as to the combination of classic breed type with structural functionality,  fabulous headpiece with its expressive features,  so clean cheeked with parallels down to a strong underjaw,  so balanced,  so well angulated,  slight rise over loin,  a correct “shake and dry” working coat with mane,  his movement took everything up a notch & never faltered with its breed specific accuracy and effortless long strides,  Dog CC (his 2nd) & BOB,  did the breed proud in the Group where he continued to perform to the absolute max.  2 Flower, Androma Dreamcatcher At Serenlas (imp Slvn),  6.5yrs dark s/w with my judging book declaring “has a tail!”,  super expressive eye & ear,  good neck,  great shape & structure,  scored in rib & depth,  was absolutely sound & gaited well on excellent feet,  would not have been the least surprised had he carried a Ch title & wish him well moving onward. 3 Phillips, Essanjay Against All Odds 

VD (3) 1 Williams, Ch Mejola Fate And Fortune ShCEx,  rising 9yrs b/m,  100% Corydon breeding & Ch sired,  hence unsurprisingly of ideal breed type & structure together with an ideal head type scoring in eye, ear & muzzle,  flat top coat with density & striking colour,  moved absolutely sound with positivity,  truly a credit to all concerned.  BVIB  2 Jones, Brooklynson Black Diamond With Dancol,  handsome 7yrs tri so richly marked,  expressive eye,  such a gd shape,  not quite the neck & front assembly but excelled in his well angulated, muscular, rear that gave him plenty of drive. 3 B Heart Of Gold  

SBB (4) 1 Rose, Beldones Clementine Avec Coloratura,  3yrs s/w,  nicely matured,  very typical & shapely,  expressive eye & ear,  had a pleasing style & dignity about her,  absolutely sound maintaining her outline as she freely gaited,  should be well able now to hold her own against her peers.  2 Boyle, Timeless Destiny Star Actis Over Barrenclough JW (Imp, Pol) literally just turned 2yrs s/w so as to be giving away a full 12m of maturity & it was that lesser degree of development that showed,  otherwise I found nothing but positives,  super head with such an expressive eye & ear,  excellent bodylines with a well fitted coat,  correct degree of croup enabled an excellent tail carriage,  plenty of promise & winning ahead of her. 3 Bartram, Ambartr’s Dignity And Pride 

MPB (4) 1 Vogan, & Vogan, Lenosann Wildest Dreams,  6m s/w I had noted as of “classic lines” that makes particular sense now that I see she is a daughter of the BOB,  excels in head features so as to be so expressive,  so proportionate & shapely,  she had been so well drilled in showing already as to maximise her virtues & the fact she flowed along so effortlessly with absolute soundness,  one to watch, for sure. 2 Moore,  Omordha Sweet Tooth,  6m  b/m whose only so-called “fault” was that she was just that bit more raw, consistent with her youth,  so feminine & attractive,  excellent eye & ear,  shapely,  quality coat that fitted her so well & was eye catching in its colouring,  very showy with an assured future.  3 Beardsworth, & Beardsworth, Wicani Dulcibella Gyda Maysinder 

PB (7,1) 1 Hodges, Jopium Follow My Heart,  11.5m s/w,  one of those that gives you goosebumps & you can’t take your eyes off her,  so classy both in head & body,  flat skull,  clean cheeks,  parallel planes,  gradual taper,  oblique, almond eye,  so shapely & well constructed that your hands both flow over her and confirm her well arched neck & well angulated forehand under a full, dense coat,  a joy on the move being not just absolutely sound but strides out so light & effortlessly,  was flawless in the challenge where all your sporting cheers backed what I believe will be her inevitable, and soon to follow, Ch title. Bitch Challenge Certificate & shortlisted in the PG. 2 Blake, Corydon Cristal Vision,  rising 12m tri litter sister to 2nd in PD,  classic head type with expressive, well placed, features,  impressive outline,  maybe not the best placed neck & shoulder but came on absolutely typically,  certainly the best of rears & firmest of hocks that gave a parallel action with some drive,  excellent coat & colour,  extra promising I reckon.  3 A Dignity And Pride 

JB (5,1) 1  J Follow My Heart 2 Lockyer, Gataj All That Glitters,  13m s/w half-sister to 2nd in MPD having the same Belgian import sire,  so very typical  & so very feminine,  fabulous head in skull, via eye & ear, to muzzle,  great structure  with correct rise over loin,  moved both sound & light,  simply less forward that is no fault whatsoever,  one to watch 3 Steven, Cambrogan’s Blissful Barra 

YB (3) 1 Walder & Walder, Hanvale Patsy Stone JW,  rising 2yrs s/w,  cracking b out of a dam imported from Hungary,  such quality & so easy on the eye with the loveliest of bodylines,  let’s just say that she ticked all the boxes I have been ranting on about with the cleanest of expressive heads, the arch to her neck, her angles, her coat & the rise over her loin,  so sound & free flowing, handled to advantage,  clearly of Ch quality & wish her well for what I see as the inevitable. Reserve Bitch CC.  2 Collino, Imaginist My Fair Lady,  20m s/w,  classy b built on excellent lines,  beautifully refined in head with its clean cheeks & parallel planes but still with sufficient strength of muzzle,  expressive almond eye,  excellent structure & developing well,  keeps a gd outline on the move,  just not in fullest coat today which is merely a state of affairs as opposed to a fault,  certainly one for her peers to be aware of. 3 Growcott, Chantique Sent From Heaven For Lillyway

 NB (4,2) 1  W Dulcibella G M,  7m b/m who was 3rd in MPB,  very nice body shape,  well angulated,  excellent rear,  a touch finely muzzled,  slight stop,  oblique eye & well placed & used ears,  made gd use of herself whether standing or moving,  a promising baby 2 Carlton, Lynmead Dresses The Stars Of Sambreeze,  6m s/w  who stood Res in MPB,  simply rather raw as yet & learning the ropes,  expressive eye & ear,  nicely bodied,  will hopefully grow on so as to make the grade.  

GB (3,1) 1 Clementine Avec C 2 Quince, Oakley Ice Queen For Karafaye (Imp,Pol),  2yrs b/m,  loveliest of heads with expressive eye & ear,  gd balance  & combination of skull & foreface,  well arched neck,  well angulated,  good shape plus quality coat both in texture as well as colour,  was just that tad reluctant, in comparison, to use herself to advantage.  

 PGB (5) 1 Beardsworth & Beardsworth, Maysinder Sapphire Reign,  3.5yrs b/m,  very typical with a great shape & structure about her,  very good head with expressive eye,  typical in coat & colour,  so many positives plus sound & smooth moving once she got into her stride.  2 Melonie, Atirakin Star Dunes,  2yrs s/w,  so feminine with quality lines,  cleanest of refined heads excelling in eye & ear,  giving a lot away in age & maturity so as to appear a little tall accentuated by a  lack of coat,  all this is but temporary that the maturing process should readily address. 3 T Destiny Star Actis Over B 

LB (12,2) 1 Lockyer, Gataj All That Sparkles,  2.5yrs s/w,  rather classy who went well & stood with dignity,  excellent eye & ear,  excellent body shape with a well fitted double coat,  lacking a little in neck & shoulder compared to her well angulated rear & her drive off a firm hock,  self-evidently able to take on her peers, & hold her own, at the top level. 2 Congdon, Riverside Song Nebraska At Aaronwell (Imp,Rom),  bang on 4yrs tri,  really nice bodylines,  excellent head with expressive features,  good neck, forehand & angles,  sharp enough in croup,  richly marked with a harsh outer coat,  she gaited with an easy gait to fill the eye,  surely a valuable acquisition & hope she’ll breed on. 3 Cooper, Corydon Agatha Cristal With Kelekona OB (8,1) 1 Congdon, Riverside Song Desiderata At Aaronwel(imp Rom),  5.5yrs s/w half-sister to 2nd in  

LB,  another cracking b. with the best of breed type & bodylines,  totally feminine yet giving the appearance of a working capability,  best of heads with expressive features,  arch to neck,  deep chest,  light, effective, stride,  just lacking coat in the final analysis,  clearly worth a Ch title 2 Scott & Scott,  Chantique Deja Vu,  6yrs s/w,  lovely b. in very good coat that enhanced her outline,  so very well bodied & shapely,  albeit needs no more condition,  not quite the neck length,  head had gradual taper, w/o prominent cheekbones, plus parallel planes,  ears well placed,  relatively oblique, almond eye,  sound with breed specific front action.  3 McCarte & McCarte, Roughrigg Remember Me 

VB (5,2) 1 Collino, Imaginist Willow Wren,  8.5yrs tri of undeniable quality,  instantly scored in skull, eye & muzzle,  so shapely with such excellent conformation,  well angulated fore and aft,  well arched neck,  moved as anticipated, having been hands on,  richly marked dense double coat.  2 Boyle,  Monsolana Madam Blues Over Barrenclough Sh.CM VW (Imp, Rus),  10yrs b/m shown in remarkable condition,  ideal muzzle & clean cheeked,  expressive ears,  loved her shape through to correct rise over her loin,  excellent coat & colour,  all credit to this exhibitor.  3 Swain, Aaronwell Azena For Lexcol
