Rough Collie Dogs

I would like to extend my sincere and grateful thanks to the committee and exhibitors on this, my first CC appointment. To the committee for a well-run show and a delicious lunch; and to all those exhibitors that braved ‘Storm Amy’ to attend, particularly those who travelled up from Southern England.
The weather conditions made it even more impressive that I found so many of the exhibits to be presented in superb condition, clean and groomed back to the skin. Teeth were also clean in general, although a couple of exhibits would benefit from some particular attention in that department.
The venue was a little daunting for some of the dogs, and was probably their first time back indoors after the summer shows, which had an effect on movement for some.

Minor Puppy Dog (2,0)
1. Paulara Ocean Raine at Geosamka
6 month old blue merle, of very friendly disposition and a smile on his face. He has a correct wedge head of good proportions, ears well set, and a nicely sized and oblique eye. Good angulation front and rear, and well off for bone to neat feet.
Viewed in profile, he is well proportioned. His colour will hopefully clear as he matures. He moved very confidently for one so young, especially in the indoor hall environment. His rear movement needs to tighten, as one would expect at this age, and I think that a little bit of weight loss would benefit him also. Well presented.
2. Camanna Coloured Charco
Tricolour lad of almost exactly the same age as (1) and a lot to like about him. He’s of good size and substance, with a very masculine appearance. Good length of head and nice dark eye. Not holding his ears as tight as he could, but was a little
distracted in the hall. A well arched neck leads to a good length of back, neatly fitted jacket, and jet-black colour. Another puppy well off for bone, and in good condition all over. He was a little erratic on the move compared to my class winner, and a little behind in his schooling.

1. Gataj Strike It Lucky BPD
10 ½ month old sable boy who I absolutely loved. He has a beautiful expression coming from a lovely combination of eye size and placement, perfectly tipped and placed neat ears and just the right amount of stop. His underjaw is exceptional.
Presented in immaculate condition, very well trained, and at one with his handler. On the move he seemed unphased by the surroundings and strode out well with good reach at the front. Happy to award him Best Puppy Dog, and in agreement with my co-judge, Best Puppy in Show. I look forward to seeing how he develops.

1. Gataj Perfect Timing
20 month old sable dog, and another presented in gleaming condition. He has a sweet yet masculine expression but I would prefer his eye a fraction more oblique. He has a good length of neck which is really set off by that gleaming white collar. When stood, he just needs to stretch himself out more rather than with his back legs tucked under. This gave the impression of him being square, which I did not perceive to be the case. He was a little more reluctant than his younger kennel mate in the hall environment, and this manifested as an apprehension in his movement today.

Graduate Dog (3,1)
1. Paulara Blaze of Glory
2 year old sable boy in full coat and presented in great condition. He has a wonderful expression and his eye set and shape appeals to me greatly. He also has well set, sized and tipped ears, but these can be a little hidden by the profuse coat present around his head. In profile he is well proportioned, with a lovely level topline. My notes on this exhibit say “heartache of the day” as unfortunately he decided he was not a fan of the venue at all. I was able to assess his movement for 1 ½ lengths of the mat, and that was enough for him to win the class. However, after that the brakes were firmly applied and his owner withdrew him prior to moving again in the challenge. I must commend him for this, as the right thing to do and absolutely in the best interest of his dog, who was clearly unhappy.
2. Thistlewings Andromeda
3 year old sable in good coat, which was well groomed. He has a well filled muzzle, soft expression, and nice amount of stop. Today, he was reluctant to use his ears and I would prefer his eye a size smaller. He’s otherwise all in proportion and moved OK. Clearly very much in love with his owner.

Post Graduate Dog (4,2)
1. Starlenga All About Majic for Corisian JW
2 year old sable boy in good coat, which is a rich, deep colour sable. He has the softest masculine expression and lovely, dark eye. His ears are nicely sized, correctly tipped and he does use them to his advantage, but I would prefer them tighter on top. His body is balanced overall, with sound construction front and rear. His profuse coat was presented in excellent condition, and his training and attentiveness to his handler is superb. His movement was free, with good tail carriage when moved away and back, but he was a little reluctant on the corners of the mats when moving in a triangle.
2. Avonfair Aloysius JW
2 year old, and a very flashy young man. He has a lovely head and expression, topped with neat and tidy ears, correctly tipped. Good underjaw. Would prefer a little more length of neck, and he was another that was tending the tuck his back legs under, which a&ected his outline when viewed in profile. Tail was of good length, but carried a little happily on the move. Presented in immaculate condition, his whites were spotless.

Limit Dog (5,1)
1. Geosamka Loves to Love at Ithilien RDCC
2 year old sable gent who was another who seemed unphased by his surroundings today. He has a beautifully filled muzzle, nicely sized eye and used his ears well presenting a soft and kind expression. Good amount of neck, and length of back compared to his height, although he does drop away slightly on his topline. He’s carrying just the right amount of coat for me, which was clean and groomed perfectly, and he stood and showed himself to his advantage for his handler. On the move he was confident, and carried his tail correctly, which tipped the balance for me when moving him for the second time in the challenge.
2. Corisian Parisian Magic
4 year old sable boy of good size. He has a lovely length of head and great set ears, but for me the slightly smaller eye of my class winner was my preference on the day. When viewed in profile he presents a lovely picture, in balance with a pleasing outline. On the move he was not quite as assured as my class winner, but moved well nonetheless.

Open Dog (4,0)
1. Beldones Ivory Star DCC/BIS
Sable boy who is quite remarkable for not-quite 20 months old. His head handles really nicely, with everything in proportion as it should be; parallel planes and neat ears absolutely bang on top. Fantastic reach of neck, and great substance and bone to him. When stood, he is a picture of balance. On the move, his excellent front and rear construction shows in his effortless action, and his rear drive is exceptional. He too was completely unphased by his surroundings, or the floor surface. He’s carrying a good amount of coat, which is coarse as it should be and spotlessly groomed. Considering his age, his focus on his handler completed the package, and every time I glanced at him he was showing his socks off. Absolutely deserving of the CC today, and Best in Show in agreement with my co-judge.
2. Daliyhaa Master Craftsman ATCAZ23600IKC
3 ½ year old tri-colour and another quality exhibit. He has a lovely clean head, just the right amount of stop and a correct eye, both in terms of size and placement. Good earset, but today they were a little light at times. With hands on him, he is clearly well constructed to the front and rear. Good length of leg to length of back ratio and exceptionally well-schooled. He looked to be losing coat and was carrying less to his back end compared to round his shoulders and neck, which upset the overall balance slightly when viewed in profile. On the move, he covered the ring with ease and his construction shone through. However, when called in to challenge for the RCC and move again, he was a little too comfortable in his surroundings and his tail carriage was a little too happy.

Veteran Dog (4,1)
1. Ch Oakland Blue Style du Clos de Seawind at Zolkhan (Imp Fra) BVD Distinguished blue merle gentleman who doesn’t look his 7 ½ years. Shown in lovely condition, and I particularly noted his lovely clean teeth. He has a balanced head, lovely eye set and ears which he uses to his advantage…clearly still loving the showring. Lovely bone, well constructed and muscled front and rear. Good blue colour to his coat which was well groomed. Moved soundly, just a little hesitant on the floor surface.
2. Wilmaranna Out of the Blue for Cathbri
Blue merle almost 9 years old, not that you’d know it from his attitude today and he clearly doesn’t feel his age! Of good size, well filled muzzle and presented in good condition. Front construction is OK, but on the move today his tail was a little too wild.
