British Collie Club Open show December 2024 Smooth Collies

I would very much like to thank the committee for inviting me to judge the Smooth Collies. I would also like to say a big thank you to all those that braved the weather to bring their dogs along. I have a blueprint in my head of what I believe a good quality collie should look like and that is what I look for when judging.

Veteran Dog or Bitch (3 entries 1 absentee)
1st BENTON Miss M Ch Oakestelle Artimis ShCEx, VW 7 year old Blue Merle bitch. Feminine head with good eye and ear placement, correct slight stop. Well arched muscular neck leading to well laid back shoulders. Excellent depth of chest with good width. Level topline with slight rise over the loin, tail of correct length. Tight feet. Correct angulation fore and aft which enables her cover the ground with ease. Would like a little more length of back. BVIB

2nd COWLING Ms E Koczkodan Serenity, 8 year old Tri bitch. Pleasing head, correct stop and clean wedge. Ears slightly wide set. Good neck and chest with correct depth with good width. Good front angulation, would like a little more bend of stifle. Slightly dipped topline but overall well muscled and moved well.

Junior Dog (3 entries 2 absentees)
1st METCALF Mr A & Mrs S Koczkodan Well I , 17 month Tri very much a teenager of good size, correct length to height. Excellent colour. Muzzle could be cleaner and eyes a little darker. Good length of neck and front angulation. Would like to see a bit more weight on this young man.

1st HOWE Mrs D Lizoni The Drifter, 2 year Tri very masculine young male lovely outline. Correct wedge shaped head with a well placed stop, obliquely set dark eyes, ears slightly wide. Good strong neck into well laid shoulders and good chest. Good tail length. Moved well.

2nd METCALF Mr A & Mrs S Koczkodan Well I Never, (See Junior Dog)

1st SEAGER Mrs E & Mr L Blamorder Magic Maker With Freejack JW, 2 year Sable that is a striking looking all male youngster. Super outline, length to height ratio correct. Balanced head with clean muzzle and good backskull, well placed dark oblique eye. Ears correctly placed of good size with correct slight tip. Expression showing a gentle intelligence. Good length of neck into good lay of shoulders. Chest with good depth and width. Correct return of upper arm giving good forequarters. Good bend of stifle. Lovely level topline with good length of loin and correct rise, correct croup and length of tail. Super effortless movement. Very excited to see this young man when he matures further. BD BOB RBIS

Puppy Bitch (3 entries 1 absentee)
1st BENTON & BEMELMANS Miss M K & Ms E Blamorder Double Or Quits Of Oakestelle, 6 month Blue Merle with  balanced head, well filled muzzle, very sweet feminine expression, perfectly placed ears of good size and really dark well shaped eyes. Lovely outline when standing. Well muscled neck, good chest. Extremely long tail. Moved very well. Already showing herself to be at one with her handler. BPB BPIB

2nd DAVIES-BROWN Mr G & Mrs M Blamorder I Dreamed A Dream At Wystry, Tri 6 month old litter sister to 1st but quite different. Much finer head, good well placed ears lovely dark eyes but a little round. Would like more underjaw. Good chest, lovely jet black colour. I felt she was carrying a bit too much weight today which was causing her elbow out on the move.

1st BENTON Miss M K CH Brackenhaye Queen Of Hearts Of Oakestelle, 4 year Tri bitch very feminine, good size, lovely outline. Sweet eye and well placed good size ears. Well arched muscular neck, good width and depth of chest. Lovely tight feet and coat of correct texture. Very sound on the move holding her topline. BB

2nd JERRETT Mes D L Coldelee Eternal Sunshine JW, 2 year Sable bitch much finer than 1st again very feminine with sweet expression. Nice dark eye, good ears and good underjaw. Would like more fill in muzzle.  Good bend of stifle but a little straight in front. Moves well. RBB
