Show report for City of Birmingham Championship Show,
1st September 2022    (Smooth Collies)

My thanks to the hard working committee for the invitation to judge Smooth Collies at this well run show, with good sized rings enabling the dogs to really move out.  I was impressed with the overall quality of the dogs entered, all immaculately presented, and the breed seems to be in safe hands. I was delighted to see my BOB take Group 3 in the strong Pastoral Group.  Also many thanks to Joyce and Mark, my two hardworking and cheerful stewards who had a very long day with two breeds, followed by a Breed Club show.

SBD (2) 1. Wensley’s Constella Hazy Cosmic Jive. Attractive tri of almost 12mth, good wedge head with neat well placed and used ears, nice eye, good reach of neck, firm topline, but needs to develop in front assembly.  Well set and carried tail. Moved out well, just needs time.
2. Seager’s Blamorder Scale Force. Happy 17 mths tri with a delightful temperament, but not taking things seriously today. Stronger in head than 1st, and ears a bit erratic. Well put together and moved reasonably well once settled.

VD (1) Lusty’s  Can.Gr. Ch.Cardross Red Dirt Road to Blamorder (Imp Can.) 7yrs top size rich gold s/w presenting an impressive, balanced outline. Shown in hard muscular condition, with a strong arched neck, firm topline, well angulated fore and aft with a good depth of chest, well ribbed up with strong loin and correctly set and carried tail. His head is also exceptional, correct level planes with flat skull, well place stop, firm underjaw, strong moulded muzzle, perfectly placed and tipped ears and surprisingly clean through the cheeks. His eye is well placed but did give a slightly “foreign” expression. His coat has the harshest crisp texture. Movement was sound, light and ground covering. He had to be in consideration in the challenge, and although I did appreciate his many qualities, in the final line up with some quality dogs, I felt he was a little too strong in relation to the UK standard. Nonetheless, a quality dog.

PD (2) 1. French’s  Wynele Dressed to Thrill at Breckamore. Very promising well grown 10 mths tri in good body condition. Clean head with good planes, neat well used and tipped ears, nice dark eye giving kind expression. Nice reach of neck into well angled shoulder, flowing into firm topline, front developing, correct tail set and carriage. Moved out well. Should have a good future.
2. Bemelmans’ Moseliqa Proudfoot. 7 mths baby, full of himself and enjoying every moment in the ring. Finer in type than 1st, and at that awkward stage with erratic ears and slightly round in eye. Currently lacking 1 important requisite for a male today, but time is on his side. Movement difficult to assess, but temperament 100%.

JD. (2) 1. Wensley’s C. Hazy Cosmic Jive.
2. Seager’s B. Scale Force.

PGD. (1) 1. Wensley’s C. Hazy Cosmic Jive.

LD. (1) 1. Flower’s Breckamore Peaky Blinder at Lyndaryn.  Attractively marked b/m of good colour, presenting a nice outline. Good head with correct planes and well placed stop, combined with well-set eye and neat ears, giving the desired expression. Nicely proportioned throughout, with strong neck, firm topline and well-rounded croup with long well set tail. Steady on the move with long easy stride.

OD. (5) 1. Naulls’ Ch. Wynele Indian Ink.  Medium sized tri of excellent type, who commands attention. Totally balanced from head to tail with no exaggeration His head is text book, so clean through head and skull, with defined underjaw, well filled muzzle, correct stop, perfectly placed and tipped ears, completed by his most beautiful dark obliquely set eye, giving a sweet yet masculine expression. Body wise, everything is in proportion, correct angulation fore and aft, with a good front, length of neck, depth of chest, firm topline with that rise over the loin and correct set and carriage of tail. In optimum muscle and condition, he moved as I hoped, with easy ground covering action, and showing a clean set of pads on the away. Totally at one with his owner, I couldn’t see past him. CC, BOB and congratulations on taking G3 in a strong Pastoral group.
2. Beeney’s Coneypark Black Sabbath. Mature tri who I have long admired for his substance and overall shape. Top of the range for size, but without any trace of coarseness. His head is in keeping with his size, but clean throughout with flat skull, correct stop, well filled muzzle, defined underjaw, neat, well set and used ears and dark obliquely set eye giving a gentle intelligent expression. Well angulated, with a good front, neck and topline, croup and tailset. On the move he is very light on his feet with an effortless ground covering stride. RCC.
3. Loader’s Ch. Coneypark Countdown for Allangill.

VB. (1). 1 Benton’s  Ch. Oakestelle Venus de Milo Vw.   Quality b/m making light of her 9 yrs, retaining her clean head and shape. She obviously enjoys showing and doesn’t seem keen to retire anytime soon. On the move she flowed round the ring showing the youngsters what is expected of them. A worthy Ch. and credit to her owner.

JB. (2) 1. Naulls’  Wynele Obsession, 14 mths tri daughter of my dog CC winner, and she has definitely inherited many of his outstanding qualities. She has the same classic head, most beautiful and expressive eyes, perfectly placed and tipped ears. Clean outline with everything balanced and in proportion. Very good front, and long well carried tail. She moved like a dream around the ring, covering the ground with ease. She just needs to mature, before making it to the top.
2. Richardson’s  Lizoni Va Va Voom. Another attractive tri of 15 mths, nicely made with an elegant outline from her smooth wedge head, lovely reach of neck, good front and body length with nice rise over the loin, and long well carried tail. Well angulated fore and aft. Well placed eye, but not quite the expression of 1st Sound on the move.

PGB (4, 1abs) 1. Howard’s  Shandlmain’s Sofistikate. Nice class, and nit picking here as they all had different attributes. Sofistikate won here on her excellent balanced front and rear angulation which enabled her smooth flowing action. She has a beautiful balanced head, correct stop and good ear carriage, although her eye is not as sweet as “Sweet Dreams”. Jet black coat with rich tan markings and correct texture completed the picture.
2. Richardson’s Koczkodan Sweet Dreams of Lizoni. Another quality tri, a little more elegant in outline due to more body length. Firm topline, good tailset and carriage. Excellent hindquarters with elegant sweep to the stifle, not quite in balance with a slightly upright shoulder. Typical head, good stop, lovely eye set and shape giving a pleasing expression. Moved out well.
3. Bemelmans’  Oakestelle Asteria.

LB. (5) 1. Denton’s Brackenhaye Heart and Soul. This lovely tri bitch crept up on me, and it wasn’t until I started to go over her I appreciated her quality. She is really well constructed, with a lovely arched neck, very good front with balanced rear quarters and strong hocks, firm topline with an elegant body length, and lovely sweep over the croup, finishing in a long, well set and carried tail. Good bone and feet. Her head is very feminine in expression, with balanced planes, correct stop and moulded foreface, well set and used ears. Her movement was light and easy but positive, both in profile and to and fro. Surprised myself, but happy to award her BCC.
2. Sweeney & Lusty’s Blamorder Do Quite Nicely. Attractive b/m, well broken but could be a clearer blue. On first look I had thought this could be my class winner as she is very feminine. Lighter in build, with a good forechest, reach of neck, smooth topline and well-turned stifle, producing a beautiful silhouette. A smooth balanced wedge head with well placed eye and ear set produced a sweet expression. Did everything asked of her on the move. RBCC
3. Kennedy’s Shandlmain Serene.

OB. (6, 2abs) Howard’s Brackenhaye Heartbreaker at Shandlmain. Another quality tri girl, and I see from the catalogue she is the litter sister of the BCC winner, and many of the same remarks apply as they are so similar, with excellent front, matching hindquarters and length of back. Although she showed herself well here, the unfortunate need of a different handler to move her put her at a disadvantage, as although demonstrating she was capable of sound movement, she was not as relaxed and fluent as she could have been.
2. Jerrett’s Blamorder Sunny Sky.  Mature s/w with lots to like. Good front, depth of chest, arched neck into firm topline and nicely rounded croup with long tail. Ideally I would like a little more angulation in the rear, although she shows off an attractive outline in profile. Balance head with well placed stop, good ears and nice eye set and shape giving feminine expression. Moved freely with drive.
3. Flower’s Ch. Breckamore Butterfingers. Completed a beautiful trio.
