Best Special Beginner :

“Appears as dog of great beauty, standing with impassive dignity, with no part out of proportion to whole, giving the appearance of working capability.” These few words in the start of the standard, describing the general appearance, sums up in my mind so nicely what a Rough Collie is all about. You want the head, the expression, the balanced outline – but also the movements that shows the working capabilities. All in one dog. Hard to get, but when you do - there’s nothing more beautiful of breeds!
Ever since I nagged my parents for a dog, and saw the opportunity to get a Rough Collie as my mother had one growing up, this breed has had a very special place in my heart. I am so grateful for Birmingham National to give me this opportunity to judge the breed in the country of origin, and I am very thankful for all the exhibitors allowing me to assess and judge their dogs. With excellent help from my ring stewards, I really enjoyed working my way through a high number of entries. A day I will remember for a long time.
As stated in the beginning, to find all the sought-after qualities in one dog is hard. Since I started judging the breed nearly 20 years ago, I have experienced the quality to be mixed both in the UK, Scandinavia and on the continent. It is quite easy to find many exhibits with one or the other of the qualities sought for, but not that many with the combination of them all.
As I judge, I don’t think this beautiful breed deserves for us judges to settle for just a nice head with a lovely expression, without the body or movements to complete the picture. Or, likewise, a soundly constructed dog with nice movements, without the typical head and expression. The legacy of the breed, stated so nicely in the general appearance, deserve “the full package”.
One challenge in the breed I find, in general, and also this day, is to find strong enough and long enough underjaws with the sound bite the standard calls for. I did find several dogs with too narrow underjaws, not allowing for a sound bite. This was, in several of the classes, reflected in my selection and placements. A weak underjaw is one thing, but when it is too narrow to give sufficient place for canines it is not a healthy enough bite for me.
To exemplify the working capability, I also like to see the Collie as a nice and easy mover with enough energy and drive. A dog that has the working abilities, in addition to a balanced and beautiful outline, that effortless look as if they could have continued moving for a longer time. Here I found some with nice sidegait but too narrow coming and going, lacking the single tracking and the power and drive we would like to see. Others, again, had very nice construction but not quite with the condition and energy to fully show it. The latter is a question of not only breeding them “fit for function” but also keeping them “fit for function”…
When that said, I was overall very pleased with my main winners. They had that nice combination of head/expression, construction, and movements, with nothing out of proportion or distracting to the eye. My CC and RCC winners all had these sought for qualities and I was really pleased to award them as my winners this day. I also have to highlight my Best Puppy winner, she had such a nice quality and balance already at a very young age, and I take that as a good sign for the breed and the future.
Thank you all for allowing me to have this privileged day in your ring.

1st: 9050 BOYLE, Dr Lynda Winifred Monsolana Aspire to Inspire over Barrenclough (Imp). 19 months tri-colour, well developed for age. Masculine and of nice size. Head with a nice wedge-shaped skull and foreface, nicely filled out all the way. Well-shaped eyes that gave a very pleasing expression. Ears set a bit wide apart. Could have done with a bit more reach of neck and a better layback of front assembly. Strong and firm back. Excellent tailset and -carriage. Nice sidegait, a bit narrow coming and going. Needs a bit more body to fulfil “the frame”.

Class 3468 MPD (3 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 9100 MOORE, Miss C Wisewyn All The Time In The World (Imp) Port. 6 months. Pleasing outline with sufficient length of body. Sweet head and expression. Well-shaped and rounded foreface. Head could be more parallel in planes and is a bit deep in skull. Nicely carried neck. Nice sidegate. Still narrow coming and going. Promising coat and colour. His nice balance and outline gave him the class today.

Would like a bit longer neck on him to get a better overall balance. Body still youthful. Moderately angulated in front and rear. Did not quite want to show his movements today, but from the little he did show the sidegate seemed very promising. Colour could be richer but will hopefully develop over time.

Class 3474 PGD (10 Entries) Abs: 2
Not the strongest class. Much variety in type, size and details. My placements were also affected by some really nice dogs who had too narrow underjaws for me. This made it difficult when selecting the placement and I ended up with placing the second in Graduate as winner of this class.
1st: 9054 BYRNE, Mrs C Ingledene Affairs By Nite. Although beaten in Graduate, his classical type, overall balance, and sound construction gave him a deserved top spot in this class.
2nd: 9032 ALLSOPP, Mrs Hazel & ALLSOPP, Mr Derek & ALLSOPP, Aqualita Its A Miracle. Masculine and with an appealing outline and shape. Well-shaped head with nice expression but would have liked a stronger underjaw. Sufficient length of neck. Well bodied up. Moderate angulations. Effective and purposeful movements. Excellent coat quality.

Class 3475 LD (14 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: 9071 GEDDES, Mr J N & Mrs V Ingledene Fantasy of Blu. Of really nice size and substance. Not the biggest of the males, but since some of the males are top size, and sometimes above, it is nice to see one of more moderate size. Masculine enough and of suitable substance of body for his size. A very nice and balanced outline. Head with very nice well-rounded foreface. Nicely shaped and placed eyes and ears gave a pleasing expression. Nicely arched neck of sufficient length. Smooth movements with powerful drive. Front movements still a bit loose and will hopefully settle with time.
2nd: 9125 SPENDELOW, Mrs Jane Uffspring the Understudy. Another male of nice substance and a good length of body. Masculine head with a very classical expression. Could have done with a bit more reach of neck to get an even more balanced outline. Moves well but did not quite show the same energy and stability on the move as the first.

Class 3476 OD (9 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: 9070 GEDDES, Mr J N & Mrs V Ch Ingledene Mercury Risin JW – CC. In a strong class of mature dogs of nice substance, this dog stood out with an excellent combination of grace, outline, expression and movements. Wedge shaped head of the correct length, well rounded foreface, just the right amount of stop and nice parallel lines. Nicely arched neck blending smoothly into the withers and a strong topline with the correct slight rise over the loin. Stands well balanced. Showed his qualities well on the move, where the powerful stride and stability gave the appearance of working capabilities the standard asks for. He was a pleasure to judge, and his overall qualities earned him the top spot of the day. DCC & BOB.
2nd: 9035 BARRON & JENKINS, mr & Ms J & C Xcode Della Bucca Delle Fate At Rannaleroch TAF. A male of substance. Not quite the same generous and floating lines as the first, but in nice overall balance. Another pleasing head, masculine and strong, but could have done with a bit stronger underjaw. Excellent shape of eye gave a very nice expression. Well arched neck of moderate length. Very nice substance of body and bone. Moves with nice stability and drive, but not quite the same power as the first.

Class 3477 VD (5 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 9147 WILLIAMS, Mr & Mrs S.G & J Essanjay Dark Moon Rising. A well-balanced dog, a bit more up to size but nothing overdone. In wonderful condition for his age. Head in nice proportion to size, shaped as a smooth wedge. The balance of head details gave a very pleasing expression. Good reach of neck, strong topline, and nicely angulated front and rear gave him an overall balance of soundness and movements. This earned him a well-deserved win in the class, and in the challenge also the RDCC.
2nd: 9117 SCOTT, Mrs Janet Aniesh Touch of Black. Another well-kept veteran of nice size and substance, and in good condition. Very nice expression and well-rounded foreface. Nicely arched neck and well angulated front. Firm topline and good substance of body. Moderate rear angulation. Another nice mover, with good reach and drive. Excellent coat quality.

Class 3478 SBB (6 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: 9116 ROSE, Miss E Uffspring Ultravox. Decent and sound bitch with nice outline and balance. Head of good length but moderate substance. A bit less prominent stop and more almond shaped eyes would have given a sweeter expression. Nice neck of good length. Moderately strong body. Angulation in balance in front and rear. Moves well seen from the side, a bit narrow coming and going. Coat that fits the outline of the body.
2nd: 9041 BEARDSWORTH, Mrs Mary & BEARDSWORTH, Mr Denis Maysinder Sapphire Reign. 9 months and still very much a puppy in body and movements. Very promising head with well-shaped foreface and a sweet expression. Nicely arched neck. Body still needs time to develop. Very promising blue merle colour. Promising movements, but her appearance was affected by her not being quite confident in the ring yet. This will hopefully improve with age and a bit more training.

Class 3479 MPB (3 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 9065 FLOWER, Mrs S Serenlas Pumpkin Spice. This 6-month puppy made a very positive impression. Still very young, of course, but so well developed for her age. Nice substance all over yet really feminine. An excellent head in proportion to body with well-placed stop, medium sized, almond shaped eyes and nicely placed ears gave the sweet expression you would like to see in this breed. Nicely arched neck. Already prominent forechest. Body with promising spring of ribs for her age and already a strong topline. Very promising movements. A puppy that I was pleased to award best puppy on the day, and I believe will have a very nice future ahead of her.
2nd: 9136 VOGAN, Mrs Denise & VOGAN, Mrs Denise & VOGAN, Mis Drofgnal Dazzling Desire. 8 months tricolour, nicely matured for her age. Very promising head with nice parallel lines of skull and muzzle. Well-placed and shaped eyes gave a very nice expression. Neck of sufficient length. Stands with a natural balance. Still needs time to develop in front. Firm topline with the right rise over loins. Promising sidegait but still needs a bit of time to settle in front.

Class 3480 PB (11 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: 9066 FRENCH, Ms Ann Elizabeth Breckamore Pitch Dark. In a class of much variety, this one stood out with a nice overall balance and size. Quite sound all over. Decent head of good length, excellent ears of the right size and shape. A somewhat more almond shaped eye would have been nice, but although a mild and alert expression. Well placed neck of moderate length. Body with nice spring of ribs and firm topline. Very true on the move also coming and going. Coat of very good quality but could have wanted a somewhat richer colour.
2nd: 9114 RANDALL, Mr & Mrs D A & S P Ladnar Izadorable. Another exhibit of natural balance, a bit longer in body than the first. Head with a bit more substance, nice dark eyes. Ears of nice size a bit far apart. Powerful neck of moderate length. Nice topline. Angulations in balance in front and rear. A sound mover with sufficient power and energy on the move. Excellent coat quality and blue merle colour.

Class 3481 JB (3 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 9088 LOCKYER, Mrs Melissa Gataj Good Time Girl. Feminine of natural balance and harmonic shape, that still needs to develop and settle in movement. Feminine head with a sweet expression, could still fill out in foreface and underjaw. Well placed ears of good size. A very nice neck floats nicely into the topline. Well angulated in front and rear, but the front still needs time to settle. Not quite in full coat on the day.
2nd: 9097 MELVIN & JOPSON, MRS M & J Lillyway Lemon Sparkle At Nithview. A bitch of more substance than the first, but still feminine enough. Could have done with a bit more elegance and richer flow of lines. Head with a nice expression, nicely shaped, dark eyes. Does not need any more depth of skull. A bit short in neck, but correct length of body. Nice bone and feet. Could have wanted a bit of a firmer topline on the move. Excellent coat.

Class 3482 YB (4 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: 9112 RADFORD-HOUSE, Mrs M INGLEDENE MIDNITE SKY WITH FIVEJAYS. A nice overall picture of a classical model of collie. Of nice size and body proportions, stands in a natural balance. Head of good length, in proportion to body, but could have been a bit stronger all over. Neck of fair length. Body of good substance. Moves well but could have had a bit more reach and power on the move.
2nd: 9102 MOORE, Miss C Omordha Lucky Charm. More up to size and somewhat shorter in body than the first. Feminine head of sufficient length. Well-shaped eyes and a nice expression but would have liked a bit more defined stop. Well placed ears, but one ear a bit too erect. I would also like to have seen a bit stronger underjaw. Well-constructed body and angulation, but still a bit narrow in body. Nice sidegait, but narrow coming and going. Very good coat quality.

Head of good length but could be more parallel in skull and muzzle. Neck of moderate length. Sound in body. Moderate but balanced angulations in front and rear. Uses her angulation well on the move.

Class 3484 GB (4 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 9049 BOYLE, Dr Lynda Winifred Barrenclough Touch of Silk. Very balanced and appealing outline. Nice size and harmonic proportions. Head of sufficient length and with excellent eye shape. Nice strength of the skull, but I would have liked a bit more substance in foreface and a stronger underjaw to give the muzzle a more well-rounded ending. Excellent neck where the nicely placed white collar helps extending the lines. This, followed by a firm topline with just the right amount of rise over the loin completes the outline. Moves with nice power and good stride. Excellent colour.
2nd: 9055 CLARE, Miss T & POINTON, Mrs D Aldreen Silver Trinket. A bitch of a bit more substance and a bit more elongated body than the first. Excellent blue/merle colour and just the right amount of coat, following the lines of the body. Head of nice substance and well-rounded foreface. I would have preferred a bit better balance between the length of foreface compared to skull. Nice ear placement with just enough tip of the top. Well placed neck. Body with a strong and firm topline and of good substance. Could have had a more spring of ribs to get a bit more volume behind shoulders. Moves with purpose and good energy, a bit narrow coming and going.

Class 3485 PGB (13 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: 9072 GEDDES, Mr J N & Mrs V Ingledene Nite N'Chanting. A bitch of substance but with a classic model and proportions. Very appealing head with a typical expression. Well placed ears. Nicely arched neck of sufficient length. Strong body. Stands in nice balance. Moves with nice purpose and with good drive from behind. Just the right amount of coat. Nice tricolour with sufficient richness and depth of colour.
2nd: 9131 TIPPER, Mrs Caroline J & TIPPER, Mrs C J Tiganlea Twinkling Star. Blue/merle with very nice blue colour. Nice shape and length of body. Not quite the head as the first. Nice length of skull and foreface, but a bit deep in skull. Nicely shaped eyes give a sweet expression. Ears of nice size and shape, but a bit wide apart. Sufficient length of neck but would have preferred a better layback of shoulders to get more neckline and a smoother transmission to back and topline. Suitable body for her size. Moves with good reach and drive.

Class 3486 LB (8 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: 9064 FLOWER, Mrs S Serenlas Heaven In Blu. Blue/merle of the right size and shape. Harmonic outline. Head of good length and substance, in proportion with body. Well filled out in foreface. Nicely shaped and placed eyes and a well-placed stop makes a very pleasing expression. If anything, she could have had a bit more length of skull to give a better balance. Good reach of neck. Firm topline and body of good substance. Excellent colour and coat following the lines of the dog. Moves with purpose and good drive.
2nd: 9036 BARRON & JENKINS, mr & Ms J & C Tiganlea Twinkling Saphire At Rannaleroch. Another blue/merle well put together. Nice head, not quite the same length and elegance as the first. Another well rounded foreface, but a skull with a bit more depth to it. Sufficient length of neck. Well-rounded ribs and body of good substance. Moderately angulated. A bit wide in front. Excellent coat quality. Moves well, but not with the same energy as the first.

Class 3487 OB (12 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: 9130 TIPPER, Mrs Caroline J & TIPPER, Mrs C J Tiganlea Too Good To Be True. Strong bitch, very well balanced and well put together. Feminine head with a sweet expression, just the right length and size to balance the size of body. Dark, well-placed eyes, nicely shaped ears. Just the right reach of neck to carry the head proudly. Excellent coat quality. Moves with good drive and balance and a nice effortless flow, keeping her nice outline well on the move. In the challenge her overall balance combined with the sound movements with drive, won her the BCC.
2nd: 9104 NEWMAN, Mrs L Phreelancer Phaith Hill. Another very pleasing and well-balanced bitch that caught my eye very much in the line-up. A well balanced head gave her the most pleasing expression where she just stood there observing the world with such nice dignity. This, combined with a well arched neck of just the right length and placement, gave her a very pleasing outline. I would have liked a bit stronger and wider underjaw. She stood in very nice balance, with suitable angulation in front and rear. Just the right amount of coat. Moved with reach and drive seen from the side, a bit narrow behind. She was a very strong competitor for the first place in the class, and I had no hesitation awarding her the RBCC in the challenge.

Class 3488 VB (4 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: 9137 WATKINS, Ms A COOK & Mr S Aniesh Forever Blue With Whatacoo. 9 years in very good condition for her age. A headpiece with good substance, well rounded foreface. Neck of good length, visually elongated by the rich white collar. Strong and firm topline that also held the shape on the move. Moved with nice stability and reach. Coat of very nice structure. To be picky, the merle markings could have been a bit more evenly distributed.
2nd: 9051 BOYLE, Dr Lynda Winifred Monsolana Madam Blues over Barrenclough Sh.CM (Imp). A veteran with a bit more substance of body than the first. Nice length of legs fitting well to the substance and length of body. Head of a bit shorter length and would have like a bit more length to back skull. Nice expression. Good reach of neck, strong body. Moves with nice action but could have had a bit more drive.
