Judge’s Critique

I would like to thank the committee of Yorkshire Collie Club for asking me to judge the Special Award Classes at this show. It is always a pleasure to take the long drive to both their Open and Championship shows as an exhibitor, and I knew I would get a warm welcome as always, and I enjoyed myself greatly. I must also thank my stewards for their efficiency in keeping the ring moving smoothly, and the ladies/gents looking after the catering.

I had a good entry of 11 dogs in total. There were however, a total of 7 absentees, which is unusually high, but the dogs that did come were all of great quality, and it was nice to see without exception that they had not only been groomed well, but also that their teeth and ears were clean.

1. Kinneret Kopper Kisses For Corydon

A 14 month old Sable bitch that was beautifully presented. She stood on her own in the class, but it would have taken something special to beat her. She was a little skittish, but I wasn’t going to fault her for it. She has a lovely flat skull, correct depth of stop, almond shaped eyes that are not too small. Dentition correct, and strong underjaw. Her ears are perfectly placed with the amount of tip that I really like.  She also used them well. She has strong forelegs, and stood beautifully four square quite naturally. Her top line was absolutely spot on, her hindlegs well muscled, and has great angulation. Finally, her tail was of the correct length. On the move she glided across the floor like it was effortless. If I was being picky,  I would have liked a little more reach in her front legs, but that’s just being picky. What a great start to the day!!

1. Corydon The Ringmaster

A  2 year 4 month old Sable dog, that was, as always from team Corydon, beautifully presented. This boy oozes class, and I have always liked him from ringside.  His head was all I like in a Collie – lovely wedge shape, everything  in the right place and in the correct proportions, and a sweet expression to top it all. Correct overbite, lovely flat skull, stop not too deep, ears tipped to my liking, and a lovely long neck to hold it all up. A slightly shorter coupled dog, but all still in the right proportion to the rest of him. His bone is well defined and with good angulation, and his muscle tone made me think he could work all day. His tail was correctly positioned on the move, and was the right length. Coat not too big, and in great condition. When he did move, he showed his young teammate from Junior what drive is all about.Wonderful, and I could watch it for hours.

2.         Jopium Danny Boy At Lingwell
A 19 month old sable dog that could quite easily have won the class. There was little to choose from between him and my first place, as everything in my comments on first  applied to this boy equally.  I spent quite a time deliberating, but I felt he didn’t move quite as smoothly and effortlessly. Tough decision, but one I had to make.

3.         Samhaven Time Is Money With Nikal
A 4 year old Tri bitch. A very nice girl that did nothing wrong, and I liked her a lot, but she was very unlucky to be up against two dogs that were absolutely on fire today.
