Collie Club of Wales Open Show 19/10/19
A sincere thanks you to the Collie Club of Wales for offering me this appointment to judge at this friendly, well run show.
All the dogs entered were clean and well presented and I had the pleasure of going over some really lovely collies. Thank you all for entering and bringing them for me to judge.
Minor Puppy Dog – 2/0
1st - Lockyer’s Gataj Struck by Lightening
6 ½ month sable, clean well balanced head with well set, almond eyes and good ears giving a lovely expression. Good shoulder and bend of stifle, good length of neck and back complete the picture. His movement was free and very positive for one so young. BPD
2nd – Ware’s Poker Face Du Clos De Sea Wind at Wassail
6 ½ month sable with a pleasant head, flat skull, clean through the cheeks with a defined stop and lovely dark eyes, ears on top and used well. Shorter coupled puppy but put together well with good bone and tight feet. Moved steadily.
Puppy Dog – 1/0
1st - Lockyer’s Perfect Timing Du Clos De Sea Wind for Gataj
9 month old sable who is well matured for his age and carrying a good coat. His head is clean and balanced but I would prefer a larger eye and more underjaw. He is a shapely boy with plenty of bone but movement today was rather erratic.
Yearling Dog – 1/0
1st – Geddes’s Ingledene Mercury Risin
13 month blue, coat of good colour and well broken. He has a lovely outline with good reach of neck and length of back, adequate bone and tight feet. His head has length and is clean and he used his ears when asked. I just wish there was a bit more of him. Movement was a bit erratic today, I have seen him move better.
Post Graduate Dog – 3/0
1st – Cronk’s Culbrae Code Red at Chelborn
Good sized, well proportioned, sable with a nice reach of neck and length of back, good shoulder and bend of stifle. His skull is flat and his head is balanced with well moulded muzzle and defined stop. His eyes and ears are well set to give a lovely expression. He moved well. BD
2nd – Shipp’s No More Hero’s Du Clos De Sea Wind
Smaller finer dog than 1 but with a beautiful head and expression, he has a good outline and good feet. Needs to body up a little and is not in his best coat at the moment, but a lovely dog who moved well. RBD
Limit Dog – 1/1
Open Dog – 2/1
1st - Cronk’s Chelborn Storyteller
Tri mature male in good coat and made a nice picture standing. He has good bone, adequate length of neck and good length of back, little steep in upper arm. His skull is flat and cheeks are clean. He has a kind eye and good ears which he used when asked, Moved Steadily.
Veteran Dog or Bitch – 3/1
Two lovely ladies
1st – Tame’s Samhaven Momentum
7year old sable bitch in beautiful coat, very pretty head which is still clean with no coarseness. She is well made with good angulation fore and aft and good length throughout. She moved well.
2nd – Growcott’s Jopium Fascinator
7year old Tri bitch who is balanced with good length throughout, shoulder is well laid back, nice bend of stifle and good short hocks. Her skull is flat and she is clean through the cheeks and ears are on top. She scores in movement with powerful driving gait.
Minor Puppy Bitch – 3/0
1st – McDade’s Lyndale Illusion of Love
Very pretty 6month old sable in lovely coat. Her head is balanced and clean and her well set eyes and ears combine to give a very sweet expression. She has a good neck and length of back and good bone. She moved well. Hope she grows on. BPB & BPIB
2nd – Shipp’s Perfect Decision Du Clos De Sea Wind
6 month sable, elegant and petite with a lovely head, eye and well used ears. She is nicely made with good angles and length. She moved okay just not as forward as 1.
3rd – Lockyer’s Pure Black Beauty Du Clos De Sea Wind for Gataj
Puppy Bitch – 1/1
Yearling Bitch – 5/2
1st – Tame’s Oh Susanna De Clos de Sea Wind at Rahlissa
16 month old sable well made bitch with elegant outline, head has length with lovely eyes to give a melting expression. Her ears are on top of her head and she uses them well. Good bone for size and strong hocks. She moved lightly and effortlessly.
2nd – Growcott’s Lemon Popsicle
18month old sable with nice outline and good bone. She has a good head with no flaring and a flat skull, underjaw is good but eye a tad full. She uses her ears when asked and moves well.
3rd – Flower’s Serenlas Heaven In Blue
Novice Bitch - 1/1
Post Graduate Bitch – 8/2
1st – Walder’s Hanvale Polly Shelby JW
Beautiful sable, very elegant with good length of neck and back and correct length of leg. Right amount of bone to complement her frame. Her head is very nice, she has length with a flat skull without depth, perfectly smooth cheeks and enough underjaw. Her perfectly set eyes are soft and dreamy and her ears finish the picture. She moved well. RBB & RBOB
2nd – Lockyer’s Nasty Girl Du Clos De Sea Wind at Gataj
What an unfortunate name for such a pretty girl. She is similar to 1 and a lot of my remarks apply to her also. She is slightly shorter in head and not quite so positive on the move, but a lovely bitch.
3rd – Growcott’s Lemonade Blush
Limit Bitch – 7/3
1st – Lockyer’s Takhisis Hope And Dreams with Gataj
Sable bitch with a lovely outline coming from elegant neck into good shoulder and length of back. Hindquarters were strong and well muscled promoting drive from behind and strong movement. Her head is lovely from all angles with the sweetest eye and expression topped by well used ears.
2nd – Scamp’s Stretago The Maleficent at Marketdene
Totally different bitch to 1 and I have to say her head is not for me, but she has lovely expressive eyes and good ears. She has a well put together body and the best shoulder assembly here today with long well angled upper arm and good stifles. She has a good neck and length to her back leading to rounded croup and long tail. She moved out strongly.
3rd – Lockyer’s Gataj Addicted to Love
Open Bitch – 3/1
1st – Shipp’s Gillyflower Della Buca Delle Fate
This bitch is everything I look for in a collie bitch, elegant, with length all through, good depth of chest and spring of rib, well laid back in shoulder and powerful hindquarters and good length of tail. Her head is lovely, flat skull, good backskull without being heavy and no excessive depth, her foreface is well moulded and she has a decent underjaw. Her eyes are dark and sweet and her ears are on top of her head. She moved out well, covering the ground with no effort. BB, BOB & BIS
2nd – Walder’s Ch Beldones La Vita Bella for Hanvale
Another lovely bitch of slightly different type being smaller and shorter all through, but still has the outline to draw the eye. She is put together well with all the angles in the right places, just a little steep in upper arm. Her expression is very sweet from beautiful eyes and she uses her ears well. Her fore face is well moulded with a good chin but I find her skull a little heavy. She moved well.
SAC Smooth Collies
Junior Dog or Bitch – 3/1
1st – Sweeney & Lusty’s Blamorder Do Quite Nicely
Pretty Blue bitch of 6 months. She has a lovely outline and is very feminine, her colour is clear and well broken, her neck and back have good length and her angles are good. Her head is developing but she has lovely eyes full of mischief and good ears. Her movement is excellent for such a young puppy.
2nd – Martin & Howard’s Shandlmain Blu Chief
7month old blue dog who is at the legs and wings stage. He is shapely but narrow through. He has good length of neck and back but his shoulder is a little steep. His head is clean and skull is flat, nice eyes set correctly and good ears. Movement was difficult to assess as he was full of himself.
Post Graduate Dog or Bitch – 2/0
1st – Benton’s Oakstelle Artemis
2 year old blue bitch of lovely colour, beautifully balanced with good length throughout, shoulder a little steep but good depth of chest and spring of rib. Head is clean and well balanced but a little fine in fore face. Her movement was free and effortless.
2nd – Moore’s Balmorder Ridin On A Rainbow to Manordeifi
18month old Tri bitch, quite a big girl and at the in between stage. She has a good neck and good length of back but she needs to tighten front and back. Her head is clean but her skull needs to flatten and her ears are set a little low, but time is on her side and she should come together more over the next few months.
Open Dog or Bitch – 6/1
1st – Beeney’s Ryecombe Jolly Jonquil at Coneypark
Pretty sable bitch who was well put together. Neck is long and strong leading to good shoulder and length of back. Good depth of chest and strong hindquarters. Her skull is flat and head is clean with good chin. Eyes and ears both set correctly. Her movement is positive and flowing.
2nd – Denton’s Brackenhay Fields of Gold
Thought this dog would be my winner of this class but he was just a little shy on handling which cost him 1st place. Big strong shaded sable dog, very impressive on the stand, lovely neck and length of back, shoulder good but upper arm a little steep. Hindquarters strong and powerful. He has a good head, clean and balanced, eye and expression are appealing, ears are bang on the top of the skull. His movement is a joy with a strong powerful reachy stride.
3rd – Flower’s Breckamore Butterfingers
