Rough Collies
I would like to thank exhibitors for their entries. Unfortunately, there were a high number of absentees. I would like to thank you for presentation of the exhibits, which in the main was excellent. A few of the males had knots or tangles around their testicles, which cannot be comfortable for them, and may have contributed to their hind movement! My general overview of the entry presented was in the main one of disappointment and concern. Our breed should be upstanding and regal. Far too many were lacking in bone and substance and were far too small and almost boxy looking. Breeders and exhibitors need to accurately assess and address size urgently. Movement should be surefooted and positive. Several were lucky to make it around the ring without tripping over their own feet. Making allowances for the noisy drains, and maybe the slippery carpet, I still could not believe my eyes. Rear movement was diabolical, especially in the younger classes of both sexes. Whether this is primarily due to conformation or lack of adequate/correct exercise is a point for debate. My class winners I felt covered the ground well. My final line up for both sexes pleased me, and there were several contenders in each challenge for the final tickets.

MPD (8,2)
1. Murray & Bellamy’s BELOREEN STARMAN. Well grown b/m that took my eye instantly. Balanced outline, as you would want him for 8 ½ months. Lovely bone and substance. Correct head, lovely muzzle and underjaw. Well placed , dark almond eyes giving a good expression. Well placed stop, good length of head. Used his ears well. Lovely reach of neck, flowing into good length of back. I was impressed with his amount of bone, strong legs, lovely tight feet. His colour is not his fortune, but his overall balance and positive movement once he settled made him an easy winner of this class.
2. McEntee’s GERIAN SUNCONNECTION, 7 months old and looking very much a baby. Such an appealing expression, dark eyes, ears well placed. Balanced overall at the moment , but am not sure he will make size. Showed well, and moved freely and confidently round the ring. Excellent presentation and ring training.
3. Hogg’s BROOKYNUT STORM’S LEGACY. Nice head properties on this young baby, but his rear movement was dreadful. Needs time and effort to boost his confidence in the ring.

PD (4)
1. Walker & Ritchie’s BELDONES SEDUCTEUR AT STARLENGA. 10month s/w. Stood away for his lovely body shape. He has a good clean head, well placed stop, good underjaw. Eye shape is good, well placed ears, which he used constantly. Lovely reach of neck, well placed shoulders. For his age has good depth of chest, and well sprung ribs. Good tail carriage despite being a happy boy! Excellent presentation as you would expect from this exhibitor. In the class his movement was a tad loose, but by the challenge he had lost his exuberance and settled down and I was very pleased to award him the RCC in some hot competition. I loved that every time I looked at him he was giving his all and stood correctly. BPIB.
2. Lockyer’s GATAJ BEAU OF SURPRISES. 9 ½ month with a nice outline. Gleaming jet black coat, another exhibitor with excellent presentation on all her charges. Pleasing quality to his head, although I feel his stop breaks a bit low. Lovely eye shape, good ear carriage, good chin. Nice reach of neck, flowed throughout. Well off for bone, clearly all male. Moved freely, maybe a bit close behind, but very positive coming towards me. Another well-schooled.
3. Boyles BARRENCLOUGH DIAMOND DAYS.

JD (7,1)
1. Shipp’s TREMARO CELTIC SON. Loved the shape instantly of this youngster. On handling his head, I was pleasantly surprised. Lovely rounded muzzle well placed slight stop, good eye and ear placement. Being picky, would like a bit more underjaw. Good length of neck, lovely body shape, well angulated all through. Well off for bone, he just lacked the coat to go with the overall picture. Moved very soundly behind, maybe a bit loose in the front, again being picky. Glad he kept that tail down! Will watch his progress, keen contender for the reserve ticket, am sure his day will come.
2. Lockyer’s GATAJ VELVET TEDDY SURPRISE. Full brother to 2nd in previous class, and similar remarks apply. Liked his eye shape, but I would prefer it to be more obliquely set. Appealed again for his overall size and balance. Moved out well coming and going.
3. Rusts JOTARS MOON SPRITZER.

PGD (10,3)
1. Hollinshead’s STARLYN DIAMONDS ‘R’ FOREVER. This b/m appealed to me for his lovely head. Lovely moulding to his muzzle well placed stop. Such kind eyes of correct shape and placement. Good reach of neck, nice deep chest with a good rib. Well bent stifle, lovely neat hocks. Shown in full coat and excellent condition. His own worst enemy in the ring, he insisted on pulling back into himself, making him look stuffy. When he relaxed, he looked a different dog. Moved with a lightness covering the ground well. He was lucky something attracted him in the next ring and he pulled himself up, giving me what I was looking for.
2. Ashe’s FORRESTWALK ROCKET MAN, lovely s/w I initially thought would be my class winner. Shown in impeccable condition. I loved his well-placed stop, balanced length of head, neat ear carriage. His eyes were so appealing. Good neck, lovely shoulder placement, good body shape. Moved freely but would like him to have a bit more drive. Excellent presentation.
3. Ross’s TREMARO STAR TOUCH AT SAMSHERNIK JW.

LD (11,2) I was literally spoilt for choice in this class.
1. Cooney’s JOPIUM STOLE MY HEART AT LINGWELL. Immaculately presented s/w with such a melting expression. Not a big lad, but clearly all male. He has such a gentle manner about him, almost too much impassive dignity! Well balanced throughout, has the cleanest of heads, masculine with no coarseness. Well placed stop, beautiful eyes, and flat skull. Good neck, lovely length of back down to well carried tail. Loved his amount of bone without being too overdone. Moved with drive, didn’t put a foot wrong. My notes say ‘needs more oomph’, but come the challenge he stole my heart to win the CC, and BOB.
2. Congdon’s MONSOLANA VELVET BLUE FOR AARONWELL (IMP). Well-presented b/m, such a glamour boy. Shown in full coat, enhancing his shape. Loved his head, well filled muzzle, good underjaw, lovely eye shape and placement. Neat ears, which he used well. Good
reach of neck, lovely depth of chest. Good bend of stifle, hocks well let down. Tended to toe in both standing and on the move.
3. Duffield’s ANGELFIELD FRANKEL completed a trio of lovely males.

OD (6,2)
1. Sibbald’s TELFORTH TONY. Easy winner of this class. I like his make and shape, overall he is very balanced, and just wish there was more of it. Has the most appealing head, generous stop, lovely kind eyes. His well-placed ears ensure all is nicely proportioned. He had his cheeky head on today, giving him a look at me air. His coat was immaculately presented, and he has a wealth of it! Good bone, plenty of substance for his size. Moved well around the ring.
2. Congdon’s CH.MONSOLANA SUNDEVON FOR AARONWELL (IMP). Well up to size s/w with a huge coat. Lovely head properties, adequate correctly placed stop, good ear carriage. Nice reach of neck, and really good length of body. Lovely bone, clearly all male, without being cloddy. Has a good bend of stifle and neat well let down hocks. Moved well.

1. Boyle’s BARRENCLOUGH DIAMOND DAYS. Third in puppy dog, another I would like a lot bigger. Showed steadily, nice shape, pretty head, and neat ears, well presented.

MPB (11,4)
1. Ware’s BELLA BIMBA DELLA BUCA DELLA FATE AT WASSAIL. Such an adorable s/w with excellent shape and make. Good head, with a lovely eye placement, excellent ear carriage. Shown very well, on a loose lead to show off her neck, and shape. Lovely bone for size, neat feet. Good bend of stifle, excellent presentation. Moved very well, in all aspects. Needs to grow on a lot, as for me she is nowhere near big enough. Such a shame as she is a real cutie. BPB.
2. Murray & Bellamy’s BELOREEN STARLITE. 8 ½ month jet black tricolour. I liked her head with its good length, lovely dark eye and well placed ears. Good underjaw. Balanced all over, nice length of neck & back. Stood well on tight feet. Would like slightly more bone, but overall made a nice picture. Moved well in front, but a little close behind.
3. Garside’s BARRENCLOUGH TOUCH OF GOLD AT JESSOPDAYS

PB (5,1)
1. Legge’s GATAJ SOMETHING ABOUT YOU FOR KALZAN. Lovely tricolour, with text book markings. Overall good shape, with good head properties. Feminine expression, dark eyes, used ears well. For my preference I would like a bit more stop. Nice length to neck, good shoulder placement. Plenty of heart room, nice length to back. Won this class easily on movement, very free flowing.
2. Coulson’s ERJON EVENING SKYE, another tri, bigger type, but still balanced shape. Pretty head, would like a bit more stop if being critical. Nice eye, good depth to head. Good reach of neck, excellent presentation. Good movement rear and front. Stood well, showed herself off well.
3. Boyles BARRENCLOUGH GOLDEN PEARL.

JB (5,1)
1. Wray’s BELDONES PANDORA, 13month s/w. Well-made s/w that was schooled to perfection. Stood and showed her socks off. Lovely make and shape to her, if being critical would like her a tad longer in the body. Head handles well, lovely eye placement, just enough well placed stop, well used ears. Good strong underjaw, nice depth to head. Strong neck, good spring of rib. Good bone, strong legs onto nice neat feet. Moved very well. Very well presented to give a lovely picture.

3. Congdon’s AARONWELL ALOE VERA, Lovely puppy, let herself down on the move which gave her this placing.

PGB ( 9, 1)
1. McDevitt’s CARONLEA PIXIE CHICK. I was so surprised at the improvement in this bitch. She has turned into a swan in my eyes, shown in immaculate coat and condition, her shading enhancing her curves! She has an ideal balance in height to length, her white collar enhancing her attributes. Her head has matured well; she now has a soft muzzle, good stop, lovely shaped eyes topped off with good ear carriage. Great length of neck well angulated shoulders, lovely ribcage, all on good legs and feet. Not overdone in the bone department, but has enough. Every hair groomed to perfection! I would prefer her to be shown on a loose lead, not stacked. Moved really well. Considered for higher awards, am sure her day will come.
2. McGowan’s BARRENCLOUGH GOLDEN CHARM, and a charm she is. Similar remarks as 1, with her head properties, nice length of neck. Personally I would like a bit more length of back to balance her overall picture, and to enable her to stride out more. Pretty head, good stop, well-shaped eye, very balanced headpiece. Excellent presentation, a close call on these two bitches.
3. McEntee’s GERIAN SUNPOPPET, a real cutie! I would prefer so much more of her all round.

LB (10, 4)
1. Shipp’s PRINCE OF SUNLIGHT NAOMI AT TREMARO (IMP). Although lacking in the coat department, she has a more fitted coat, with ample featherings. This bitch has all the essentials. Such a sweet expression, from her well filled muzzle, well placed stop and beautiful eye placement. Her ears are right on top, lovely flat skull. Strong neck, with enough length of back, being critical again, I would like a touch more. Lovely rear angulation, good bend of stifle, lovely neat hocks. Presentation first class and she moved well enough to top this class. In the challenge she moved with more drive in the rear. A favourite of mine, who has benefitted from a litter, and she fought hard for the ticket, but had to be content with the RCC.
2. Mitchell’s AVONFAIR SECRET ATTRACTION JW. Am very familiar with this bitch, who when a youngster I felt was a tad strong in the head for me. However, she has matured well, and today was shown in impeccable order. She has a lovely outline, good bone and excellent condition. Her head for me lacks stop, but that is only my opinion. She has a feminine expression, with such melting eyes. Lovely flat skull and she used her well placed ears constantly. I loved her shape, and her devotion to her owner. She strode out well, but her front was a tad loose today. Shown in immaculate order.
3. Walker & Ritchie’s JULIA OF LOWLANDS GREEN VALLEY AT STARLENGA (IMP). Very pretty feminine bitch, just let herself down on the move.

OB (11, 5)
1. Congdon’s MONSOLANA SUNWISH FOR AARONWELL JW (IMP). Another I have watched from a baby, blossoming into a far more confident young lady. A real glamour puss, with her shapely outline enhanced with her abundant featherings. She has matured in all departments, lovely head properties, well placed stop, and sweet eye. She has a fabulous reach of neck, and when she settles she has the correct balance of height to length. Plenty of bone, but not overdone at all her furnishings enhanced her completely today. Her owner needs to watch how she stands; it’s not all about having the dog look at you! Loved the way she strode out both in the class and again in the challenge. Pleased to award her second CC.
2. Mitchell & Jordan’s CH. CARONLEA CELTIC BY DESIGN FOR AVONFAIR JW (IKC). Many thanks for bringing this bitch, as the owner knows my thoughts on her. Today, although lacking in coat, I felt that she deserved this placing on her soundness. Correct head, with good stop, dark eyes (although not my favourite shape!), lovely parallel planes. Good reach of neck, well sprung ribs, and lovely bone. Correct shoulder placement and a lovely bend of stifle, she strode out well. Felt she was turning in a bit in front today but she has plenty of drive. In the runoff for the RCC, I preferred the sweeter eye of the limit winner.
3. Foy & Hawkins SALSINA BLACK LACE AT BELDONES

VB (1)
1. McDevitt’s CARONLEA DIXIE CHICK. Stood alone, but well deserved her prize card. She is a favourite of mine, and boy she is so unlucky not to have gained her title. Today she was in gleaming coat and condition. She is showing no signs of ageing, she has a spring and drive in her movement that many puppies today could well do with. Such a clean head, with a good stop, dark eye, and lovely ear placement. Good depth without being overdone. Lovely neck well placed shoulders. She has a lovely bend of stifle, the neatest of hocks and is presented to a tee. Today I think she was carrying a bit more weight as older ladies are allowed to do. Many thanks for bringing her she is a credit to you.
