Breed Notes

It was news many knew was coming, but to have it confirmed was not good. Last Wednesday 18th May, Carol Morgan lost her fight against many of the issues she had been suffering from for many many years. Just a week off what would have been her 74th birthday. To Mike and family, we send our condolences. Carol and Mike had the Baiodora kennel of Roughs, to which Carol added a Keeshond or two with great success.

Starting with a sable bitch from the “Cottagepatch” kennels, with guidance from May Young, Aileen Speding and others, they started to produce winners in roughs that were too numerous to mention but were always supportive of local clubs and I understand the first ever club they joined was Collie Association. So it will be a poignant day when Mike judges at the forthcoming Ch Show later this year.
In late 1970’s Carol and Mike struck up a friendship with Terry Taylor (Cathanbrae) amongst others and some of their stock carried these lines. Winners were produced for other discerning kennels including the late Peter & Peggy Bailey, who purchased Baiodora Clear Blue and campaigned her to a title. Other winners included the sables Baiodora Shepherd Boy, Shepherds Sunrise; Ch Sweet Samantha’s Golden Girl at Baiodora who annexed a few CC’s and took the CC and her title at Belfast on a Saturday, came back to England overnight on the ferry, took a 200 mile car journey and won the CC at the WECS Ch show held at Devizes in Wilts! They made up Ch Antoc Starmaster for Baiodora, who was born in 1986, the tricolour Ch Baiodora Moonlight Affair who gained his title in 2007 and some who should have been members of the upper house including Cathanbrae Black Pepper at Baiodora, Baiodora Royal Guest, Be My Guest, Belinda Black and many others to numerous to mention.

Carol was an approved CC judge who officiated and often drew good entries, her last appointment for the breed was at British in 2007, where I recall showing a youngster for his first show and he brought a smile to Carol’s face as after winning a class, he refused to exit the ring! The only way he could be persuaded to leave was by the way he came in as he disliked the coloured lines on the floor!
As proud of her collies as Carol was, her family meant so much more to her and in 2002, there was one very proud mother watching her son, Dean, win a Commonwealth Silver Medal in Bowls, in Manchester. The bowling coach for the whole team was none other than the current Chairman of the KC, Tony Allcock MBE.

The generosity of both Carol and Mike was so well known that the annual pre/during and after show parties, held around Bournemouth Ch Show dates, were very popular but everyone who ever attended will recall these events with pleasure and fond memories of many no longer with us. To all her friends and family our thoughts are with you and another obituary will be published shortly.
News in from last week, which arrived just as I had sent off the notes, but thanks to Pat Brooker who let me know that Paris Venise du Bois des Amazones for Corisian JW went to Sunderland & District Premier Show where she won not only the Open Class, but BOB from Miss L Jay and then took the Pastoral Group 1 from the same judge and according to Pat, there were 15 present in this group. Well done to all concerned.

All roads lead to Scotland this weekend with both SKC and Scottish Collie holding shows over the weekend. Starting at SKC, with first time judge, Cath Moffat (Leighton) who holds the Kylecar affix was the judge. I understand it was a rather noisy day, and in the halls, which are not great for showing a sensitive breed like our collies, many of the exhibits did not perform to their best.

Taking the Dog CC, his 2nd, following on from the win at British, was Storm. Better know as Gataj Struck By Lightning. Home bred, he is sired by Lynmack Thunderstruck out of her own Gataj Girl’s Best Friend and was born in March 2019. He won from Limit. Winning Open and the RDCC was Brenda Cooney and Jopium Danny Boy at Lingwell. He already holds a CC and a few reserves. Bred by Jo Hodges, now resident in Scotland he is sired by Jopium Stole My Heart at Lingwell JW ShCm out of Jopium Velvet Crush and was born in 2016.
The winner of BPD was attending his first show, a blue Ingledene Polar Express to Erjon, Milo is sired by Ingledene Fantasy In Blu out of Ingledene Rum Truffle and he was born July last year. He won Puppy, for Duna Jones and Josh Blackburn, beating Wilma Brodie and Shanaburn Country Road who was alone in MPD.

Veteran was won by Stacy Steven and Cariadhaf Crazy Dream (Brodie) whilst Spl Beginners went to Corydon Ice Imperial owned by Heather Raven, bred by Miranda Blake, he is by Corydon Pol Roger out of Mejola Famous Attraction For Corydon.
Bitches were headed by Jo Hodges and her Ch Jopium Love Heart JW ShCm, winning her 8th CC. Well known to us all, she has the same sire as the RDCC winner but her dam is Riverside Song Venice Queen at Jopium and born in April 2015 and she won Open.
Winning PB, to celebrate Gary Walker’s birthday, was the blue merle, Starlenga Nina Simone and she took the RBCC and BPB as there were no MP bitches entered. To remind you, this little lady is sired by Starlenga All That Jazz from Aaronwell out of Beldones Baby Think Twice at Starlenga and owned by Gary, Margo and Louise Walker.

The only entry in Veteran was absent and the winner of SBB was Uffspring Uniquely Mayd for Mrs D Clarke Kerr from Glasgow. Sired by Ch Tiganlea Tone Down, out of Samhaven Unique to Uffspring.

The final awards resulted in Jo Hodges gaining both BOB and BVIB with her sable bitch, BPIB to Nina Simone handled by Louise and Best Special Beginners in Breed to Uffspring Uniquely Mayd.

The groups had the following judges: Pastoral Marion Sargeant, Puppy with Liz Stannard, Veteran judged by Jeff Horswell and Spl Beginners by Lee Cox. Having a quick look at the Group videos, it would appear that although all our breed winners were “Local” our breed was not represented. To my mind it says much but this is just an assumption, as there were probably good reasons for their absence apart from wanting to attend the Scottish Collie Ch Show the following day!

Thanks to Secretary, Alyson Carmichael as she sent down shortly after the show, a fully marked catalogue for which I am grateful. If only other Secretaries would be as efficient and thoughtful as many exhibitors are often too excited regarding their wins to let me know until after the OD deadline passes. (However, I do see some information quickly posted on social media)

Scottish Collie Ch show was held the day after SKC and had basically the same entrants for judges Lesley Chalmers (Aintshe) for Dogs and bitches with Robin Blaikie (Kourika) with David Thomson BIS.
Held indoors, but if the weather had been better, exhibitors had been advised that judging was outside at the Barony College, Parkgate, Dumfries.

This was her 2nd appointment for the breed, having judged Driffield in 2019 where she awarded the RCC to her CC winner of today! Melissa Lockyer made up her Think Of Me Prince of Sunlight at Gataj by winning Open and his 3rd CC. Jimmy as he is known at home took his 1st from Bill Browne-Cole at Belfast in 2019, his 2nd from Mick Taylor (Bruernish) at EACA last year and has a few RCC to add to his tally. Bred in Hungary by Josef Szalcinger he was born in May 2017 and was one of a few entrants from Gataj, all of whom won their classes in Dogs including: Gataj Out of The Woods (Junior); Starlenga Elijah Blue at Gataj (Yearling) and her homebred Gataj Struck By Lightning who won Limit.

Congratulations to Brenda Cooney, having annexed the RDCC at SKC, she changed dogs and repeated her success with Ch Jopium Stole My Heart at Lingwell (sire of Danny Boy) and he too won from Veteran. He was bred by Jo Hodges and is sired by Ch Jopium Heart and Soul JW ShCm out of Jopium Velvet Touch. BPD went to Shanaburn Country Road for Wilma Brodie.

Robin Blaikie was centre stage for the ladies and he last judged YCC in 2019 where he judged the dogs. His choice for the CC was Daphne and Tony Iley’s Arklethill Delilah at Ileyda JW, winning her 2nd CC following on from her win at the recent CCW from Brian Hawkins where her details were recorded. Winning Open and the RBCC were Hannah & Simon Walder with Ch Hanvale Polly Shelby, born in Jan 2018; she is sired by Ch Beldones Double Diamond out of Ch Beldones La Vita Bella for Hanvale. Best Puppy Bitch went to the winner of MP, Sea-Dreamers Gracy Love (Imp NDL) for Karen Johnston. Bred in  the Netherlands by B. Berghout Snijder, she is sired by Just My Type of the Lario Lake out of Sea Dreamers Living The Dream. There were no entries for Veteran

The In-Show final awards were decided by David, who chose the sable bitch for BIS, with Jimmy taking RBIS and BOSIS. Best Puppy went to Wilma and Country Road and BVIS was an automatic win for Brenda and Heart and Soul.
