Breed Notes
25th March 2022
I was just reading a few comments concerning judges at shows recently, including Crufts. It appears to me that many judges (both established and those starting out) really do not have any idea of recent rule changes concerning the judging and placing of exhibits. I will not, in this instance quote any particular breed but regulations are placed by the KC to help, not hinder all those undertaking appointments and a copy of the current F1 Show Regulations can be ordered direct from the KC via https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/shop/
Maybe, some of the established judges could do well and spend some time actually doing the “Refresher Course” on current rules and regs. This is freely available via the KC Academy. Currently there are no charges involved and surely 20 minutes, just catching up on new rules and regs would be a benefit to all. So, if you are not already enrolled, even if you are an established CC awarding judge, please go and have a look. There are no penalties, should you not reach the required pass mark, but it may well help.
Talking of judges, for new judges, it is still a KC requirement to have completed the following prior to judging. Entry level (Level 1) criteria for all starter/new judges to be eligible to judge up to three classes of any breed (four if a puppy class scheduled) to be amended as follows:
a) Minimum of 5 years proven interest in pedigree dogs
b) Attend an RDSJ seminar but not mandatory to take and pass the examination but passing the exam will be required before progressing to judge more than the permitted minimum number of classes.
c) Attend a Conformation and Movement seminar
d) Complete a minimum of 2 (two) stewarding appointments.
To progress to Level 2, in your first breed, the following are also required:
- Take and pass requirements of a dog show judge examination. Judges attending an online requirements of a dog show judge seminar may take the exam via The Kennel Club Academy
- Pass points of a dog assessment
- Attend a breed appreciation day (BAD) and pass a multiple-choice examination (MCE) for the respective breed
- View ring stewarding seminar and take online quiz
- Complete critique writing seminar and take online quiz
The existing system, going via the A2 requirements will still run in tandem with the new JEP for a few years with a review after 3 years.
