Breed Notes
22nd July 2022
Just a few updates for you all regarding both Judging and Clarification of Special Beginner classes.
All Club Secretaries should be aware of the following as a General Mail-Out was made to all, recently. Regardless of who you are or however long you have been in the breed, would ALL existing and potential judges, please take note of the following: As from January 2021 no one can judge unless they meet the new requirements. This includes all classes like SAC, (Special Award Classes) and others.
There is just one exception to this, “If a valid contract is in place prior to 24th February, 2020, providing the appointment complies with KC Regulation F(1) 20.b, (For Open and Limited shows scheduling up to 3 classes(4 if scheduling a Puppy Class) for a particular breed, the selected judge MUST when appointed by the Club/Society be either (i) Be listed at Judges Education Programme Level 1 or (ii) Have met the JEP Level 1 criteria at the time of accepting the appointment)
Except:
- Judges resident in Northern Ireland. Persons approved to award Green Stars under IKC Rules and are resident in N.Ireland are permitted to judge the above mentioned classes at KC Licensed Championship Shows in N.Ireland without being included on a Breed Council/Club Judges List.
- Overseas Judges. For Non CC breeds at Ch shows and for Open and limited shows scheduling up to 3 classes (4 if scheduling a Puppy class) for a particular breed, the organising club/society MUST ensure that any overseas judge, appointed to judge has been a) Approved to judge the breed concerned at Ch Level in the country they are domiciled, or b) Listed at Judges Education Programme Level 2 or above for the breed concerned or c) are on a Kennel Club Registered Breed Club/Council B List or above
This requirement applies to all Judges, regardless of their future intentions to Judge via the “Old System” and then via A2 / Grandfather Rights or with the Judges Education Programme and are as follows:
- Minimum of 5 years proven interest in Pedigree Dogs
- Attend a Requirements of a Dog Show Judge Seminar (not mandatory to take and pass the examination)
- Attend a Conformation and Movement Seminar
- Complete a minimum of 2 FULL Day Stewarding Appointments
Now to more Rules! There has been a serious amount of discussion concerning eligibility for Special Beginners Classes. On researching the definition of these, from the KC, “Beginners” is the only Official KC Definition, which states: For Championship, Open and Limited Shows: For Owner, handler or exhibit not having won a 1st prize at any show.
However, if any class be provided with a definition other than Beginners (or other classification) the word Special must precede the name of such class.
Classes with “Special” preceding it MUST have that definition in the show schedule and it may be whatever the show society wishes and it will be the responsibility of the exhibitor, owner or handler to ensure they meet these requirements. So please read the definition of classes before you enter to ensure you are not, accidentally or not, contravening any rules of either the KC or the Show Society.
To take a few examples from forthcoming show schedules: 1) Owner, Handler or Exhibit not having won a Challenge Certificate or Reserve CC, or for those breeds not allocated Championship Status, Best of Sex or Reserve Best of Sex at a Championship Show. Another example states: Neither Dog, Owner or Handler to have won a CC. Both of these are taken from current Ch show schedules where entries have not yet closed.
Therefore it is quite clear, to me, that anyone, owner or handler, let alone dog, who wins a CC is not eligible to enter. Should you be fortunate enough to win a CC, AFTER the date of entries closing, this will NOT affect your eligibility to complete on the day. I hope this goes someway to clarify the situation.
Now to the National Working & Pastoral Breeds Ch show, held as usual at Malvern, which can be, and was rather warm to say the least! Very many thanks to Jo White, Julie Growcott and of course, the lovely phone call from John & Caroline who kept me up to date on the day’s results.
So, starting with some good news, regarding our breed, as far as I know, all those that qualified for the various groups, did stay and we had some good results for the breed. Lynda Boyle, who also had a long journey back to Derbyshire, but stayed and took her charge, Barrenclough Heart of Gold JW, under Jeff Luscott and came home with a good 2nd place in the Special Beginners Group,. Marianne Benton, with her Veteran Champion known as Kiera and was short-listed by Lynn Salt, I have no other places to confirm but a nice touch by NWPBS was the presentation of a small ribbon with “Short-Listed – Pastoral”. What a great idea and I hope other societies will follow this lead as our group is now one of the largest numerically. However, some good results in various Stakes classes. Starting with the Brace Stakes, Sophie Wray-Ramsden took a good 2nd place with her two entrants, mother and daughter, Takhisis Lady of Illusions and her daughter, T. Lady of Mystery from Dave Killilea and earned themselves a Dorwest product Voucher, gladly received by Sophie. Stefani Flower and Saffi (Serenlas Pumpkin Spice) managed a VHC in the Royal Canin Puppy Stakes, also from Dave and was the highest placed Pastoral exhibit; she also gained a product voucher. If anyone else gained a place or short-list please do let me know as this can only raise the profile for the Collie.
Our judge for the day was Marion Sargent, from Leicester, who has judged many breeds in our group but this was her first for us. However, she also had quite a full agenda on the day as she started with 2 Non CC’s breeds but these were in the Working Group and Roughs were scheduled 2nd in the ring behind Smooth Collies.
It was a good entry on paper but many decided they were not prepared to risk themselves or their dogs on a day which was forecast for high temperatures and according to Highams, there were nearly 30 missing on the day
There were just 2 entries in MP and none in Puppy and heading MP, and subsequently, at his first ever show, BPIB, the winner was a baby tricolour, Amakunaque Arcturis Wind at Tiganlea, bred here in the UK by a friend of the dams owner, Michelle Smith, and they are Misses Poploska and Fabczak who took their Rashel Fairytale to Ch Tiganlea Turning Blue.
Takhisis Lysander won Junior for Michelle Chapin, whilst the partnership of Anne Hollywood and Mrs Bolt won Yearling with Amalie A Chance to Shine. Gwen Beadon piloted Hecktor, Marvalan Spirit of Rock (Imp Poland) to win Graduate. Jo White won PG with her blue, Camanna Chasingclouds over Mejola and Valerie Geddes won Limit with Ingledene Fantasy of Blu. Alison Grainger won Open with her Ch Samhaven Ballahanna Banjo and completing the line up was another tricolour, winning Veteran, Essenjay Dark Moon Rising for the Jan Williams. A mixed Spl Beginners was won by Lynda Boyle with Barrenclough Heart of Gold JW who had also annexed 3rd in Limit. The Dog CC went to Alison and Ch Samhaven Ballahanna Banjo, his 7th CC. Bred by Liam Kelly; he is sired by Ch Samhaven Sound Track out of Samhaven From The Top Drawer. The RDCC, went to Gwen and her tri boy from Poland, he is bred by Martyna Nowakowska, born in December 2019 his sire is Pol Ch Marvalan Dream Defender out of Pol Ch Marvalan Black Diamond for Daccaria.
John Tipper won MPB with another new baby, Tiganlea Hoity Toity at Revdvicki, owned by Vikki Burrows. PB was the start of yet another good Gataj day, Shining Star du Clos de Seawind at Gataj (Imp Fra) took puppy for Melissa Lockyer. Junior went to Sue Hawkins and her Breckamore Welsh Honey For Brilyn. Julie Growcott won Yearling with her Lillyway Lemon Breeze. Graduate went to Gataj Honey Bee. Val Geddes won PG with Ingledene Nite N’Chanting whilst Mellissa changed dogs again and won Limit with Gataj Girl’s Best Friend, Open went to Brian & Odile with Beldones Looks Like Fun and Marianne Benton won Veteran with Ch Brooklynson Jane Russell of Oakestelle.
BCC, her first, following on from a RCC at LKA last year was Gataj Girl’s Best Friend. Homebred by Melissa, she is sired by Ch Beldones Double Diamond out of Ch Takhisis Hopes and Dreams with Gataj and was born December 2017. Taking the RBCC was another for Melissa, in the form of Gataj Honey Bee. She is by Once Upon a Time du Clos deSea-Wind out of Nasty Girl du Clos de Sea-Wind and born in April 2020. BPB and eventual BPIB was another win for Melissa and her Shining Star du Clos de Sea-Wind (Local Hero du Clos de Sea-Wind ex Miami Life du Clos de Sea-Wind)
Best of Breed went to Alison, BPIB to Melissa, and BVIB to Ch Brooklynson Jane Russell of Oakestelle and Best Special Beginner to Lynda Boyle.
