Breed Notes
22nd April 2022
All roads led into Wales, last weekend and some very happy and tired exhibitors emerged! Perhaps a little later than normal, as there were 2 shows held at The Royal Welsh Showground, Builth.
Firstly Working and Pastoral Breeds of Wales, starting at 9.30am had the very well known Sigurd Wilberg (Kanix) centre stage. Sigurd last judged our breed in 2019 at SKC and today had received an entry of 36 dogs and 47 bitches with some 20 marked absent.
It was 1st CC’s in both sexes and a mother and son taking awards, with a grandson taking Best Puppy in Breed, certainly some type judging on the day, so allow me to explain.
Taking his first CC, and I think, a first for his owner handler, Eleri Bluck, was non other than Phreelancer Chill Phactor for Elshajo, known to all as Ice. He won a Limit class of 8. He is sired by the popular One Extraordinary Blu di Cambiano out of Phreelancer Phaith Hill and is bred by Lene Newman in January 2019 and this is his first big award although he did well as youngster before the Covid break.
Taking the Reserve CC was the shaded sable belonging to Rachel Thorne, Triforce Dragon Heart ShCm. Although he holds a KCSB number, this may be his 1st big award at the age of 11.5 years young. Sired by Wicani Dragonsblood out of a bitch, Willosyam Nightspell at Impenzie, who is mainly bred on Corydon lines by Ros Timperon and he won a mixed Veteran class of 7.
Best Puppy Dog, was decided between the MP winner, fresh from his show last weekend, Luminous Moon. He is owned by Dee & Samantha Vogan and the PD winner, Takhisis Lysander, who also won the previous week, with the nod going to the MP.
Bitches had a first CC win in the form of the dam of the Dog CC winner, Lene Newman and her Phreelancer Faith Hill. She is sired by Ch Beldones Black Illusion out of Phreelancer Phond Memories and was born March 2017 and she won from Open.
The Reserve CC went to a new lady in the ring for Val & John Geddes, from the Post Grad class of 8, Ingledene Nite N’Chanting took this class. Sired by Ch Ingledene Spirit of Legend, her dam is Ingledene Nite Bird who is by Ch Ingledene Late Nite Legend out of Impenzie Fire Bird for Ingledene and she was born in April 2018.
The two bitch puppies were: Shining Star Du Clos De Seawind at Gataj (Imp Fra) who won, alone from MP for Melissa Lockyer and Takhisis Midsummer Dawn, who won Puppy for Sophie Wray-Ramsden but both lost out for BPIB to the dog pup. Luminous Moon is sired by Phreelancer Chill Phactor out of Lenosann Mystic Blaze at Drofgnal and bred by Shirley Fogarty.
BOB went to Ice and Eleri, and he represented us in the group and I received an email from Julie Edwards confirming that Ice and Eleri were shortlisted. I am not sure if our BPIB was also in the group, Checking the results later, I did notice that the BVIB, Triforce Dragon Heart managed at G2 but as yet I have not heard from his owner, so I suppose she is still up in the clouds following this win!
As soon as Sigurd Wilberg had completed his judging, the Collie Club of Wales started setting up for their Ch show, this was their 60th Anniversary Show, held over (Covid) and what a wonderful but long day it turned out to be. This was due to circumstances beyond the control of the small committee and helpers who included Marina and Margaret, along with Duna, who was “roped” in to mark catalogues as her grandson, Josh had to be presnt over his smooth entyr. Christine Collins confirms that the next CCW Ch show, to be held with Welsh Kennel Club in August, will certainly involve a few changes to ensure smooth running on the day. Well done to all at CCW, this your first venture into partnership shows.
As it was an Anniversary show, there were so many specials on offer to class winners, including Easter Eggs and to those placed, plenty of Welsh Cakes and Lemon Cakes. I also understand that Stefani Flower had brought cake and prosecco to the first show and also shared here too.
Phyllis Parry, was to be Referee but due to a severe back problem was unable to attend the show, and was replaced by Secretary, Christine. Phyllis had also kindly donated “Griffiths Models” for both BIS and BPIS, along with magnificent rosettes and more specials, the show commenced.
Judging here was Brian Hawkins (Beldones) who officiated over both dogs and bitches and had received a good entry of 95, he last judged in 2018 at LKA
The first class was MP with 1 entrant, Rannaleroch Perfect Storm, who also won Novice, for Carron Jenkins and her partner, Jeremy Barron from Scotland. This was followed by Puppy and Robin Blaikie took this with his Kourika You’ll Do For Me, a fellow Scot but now living “Down South” in Aylesbury. Junior went to Melissa and her Gataj Out of The Woods and another Scot, this time the Walker family from Fife took this class with Starlenga Curious George. Barrenclough Diamond Skies stood alone in Graduate for Jackie Dix. Post Grad was won by Vanessa Cronk and her Chelborn That’ll Do. Julie Edwards won Mid Limit with Starlenga Harry Potter with Elshajo whilst another Starlenga, All That Jazz for Aaronwell, owned by John Congdon won Limit. Open had 10 entries, with a few missing and this was headed by Roughrigg Rag’n’Bone Man for Morag & Jim McCarte. Veteran went to John Congdon with his multi-titled blue, Ch Jugband Blues du Clos De Sea-Wind via Aaronwell.
Now to the challenge, and taking home his 2nd CC was Rory, better known as Roughrigg Rag’n’Bone Man. He is sired by Lynmack Walk All Over You out of Beldones Fun’n’Games at Roughrigg. Born in January 2019 he is homebred. A message from Morag and Jim confirmed a strange coincidence, as when Rory won his 1st CC, they suffered a car tyre blow out on the way to the show and recently having been involved in a minor accident, which was not their fault, only just got their transport back at the 11th hour (due to the insurance company) to travel down for this show. I do keep my fingers crossed that nothing serious happens for their next outing and maybe at possible 3rd CC!!!!!
Taking the Reserve CC was Ch Samhaven Ballahanna Banjo for Alison Grainger. He is a sable by Ch Samhaven Sound Track ex Samhaven From The Top Drawer and bred by Liam Kelly in Ireland.
Best Puppy Dog went to Robin and his tricolour, whilst BVD was Jive, to whom Brian had awarded a CC to the last time he judged.
Bitches followed with MP going to Melissa and her Shining Star du Clos De Sea-Wind at Gataj with Puppy to Jo White and Mejola Main Event. Junior was Takhisis Summer Solstice at Rannaleroch for Carron and Jeremy, who had not been placed in the previous Puppy class of 12.
Rahlissa Toffee Cake for Denora was alone in Yearling for Norma Larkin who also won Novice. The next class was Graduate and this was won by Daphne Iley handling Arklethill Delilah at Ileyda. Chantique Déjà Vue won Post Grad for Chantal and Andre Scott. Dave & Sue Randall won Mid Limit with Ladnar Inkspot whilst Val Tame took Limit with her Riverside Song Xtra Sweet at Rahlissa (Imp Rom). Open was headed by Jane Llewellyn and her Artzaiak Selina de Salsina and Salsina Black Magic, also for Jane won Veteran bitch.
In the challenge, Brian assessed all his class winners again and winning her first CC was Arklethill Delilah for Daphne and Tony Iley. She is a daughter of Ch Arklethill Helena sired by Ch Chelborn Kiss n Tell, born in May 2018 she is bred by David Boyle.
Second in Graduate bitch, was the Walkers, Starlenga All About Me and was called in to challenge for the RBCC and won it. This tri bitch is sired by Ch Jugband Blues de Clos Du Sea-Wind out of Nelinka De Remember Our Love For Starlenga, to whom, if memory serves me well, Brian awarded her a RCC on his last appointment.
Best Puppy went to Jo White and Mejola Main Event, with Salsina Black Magic taking BVB.
In the breed challenges, all the awards, bar Veteran fell to the fairer sex.
CCW also schedules Smooth Collie classes here and the judge was Josh Blackburn who had a nice entry of 13, with no CC’s and BOB went to Ch Wynele Alice with Breckamore for Anne French.
I understand that the services of the Referee were required for the main in show award and at the end of an extremely long day, BIS was Arklethill Delilah at Ileyda JW, and she took home not only many of the Anniversary Specials but one of the famed Welsh Dragon Models, so much sought after. RBIS went to Louise handling the tricolour, BPIS went to Jo White and her sable, Mejola Main Event and BVIS to Jive.
