Breed Notes
10th September 2021

I was sorry to hear, direct from Bill Rogerson (Lancashire & Cheshire Collie Club) of the recent death of Peggy Bailey, wife of the later Peter Bailey, who owned the Beechwyre Collies.

Peggy died peacefully in her Care Home at Garstang where she had to been for the last few years. She had been one of the longest standing Committee members of L&C; a former Chairperson and I think she was also Cup Steward for a few years and was part of the “fixtures and fittings” at the Club.

A full obituary will be found elsewhere in this paper but I would like to mention how devoted Peter was to her and regularly visited and when possible kept her updated with all the news. Back in 2005 I had the honour to judge at Crufts with Peggy, a knowledgeable lady and when it came to the decision for BOB, we both agreed on BOB and were thrilled to see Ch Ingledene Late Nite Love take Pastoral Group 3. Peggy often joined Peter on trips abroad and made numerous friends and spent time in Australia with Gael Wilcock who became a close friend to them both. Peggy will be sadly missed by all. We send our condolences to all who knew her.

Now on a brighter note, Marianne Benton messaged me with news of a BIS win, over two days for her Ch Brooklynson Jayne Russell at Oakestelle. This was at Great Yarmouth & Gorleston Open show, with judges, Hazel Fitzgibbon for the breed, Tim Ball for the group and Becky Johnson for BIS. She took BIS on the second day of the show and then competed against the first day winner for overall BIS. Marianne also let me know that she managed to also take PG 4 with her Smooth, Oakestelle Venus Di Milo – so a great day all around

Just an update from the RCBC, they are currently revising their list of judges and this should be available shortly on the RCBC web site.  Hopefully, with just one list, showing both Breed and Non Specialists, A2 approvals, Grandfather rights etc.  It should make life easier to find an approved judge although the KC Find A Judge is now up and running on the KC Web site, but not all are yet included. There are currently some names on the B List, who do not meet the new KC Requirements, please check your status and do let us know if you are still elible to remain listed. The RCBC list will also include those who choose to go through the JEP, Judges Education Programme and would all new judges please note that it line with KC Rules, as from January 2021, no one can judge unless they meet the new requirements. The only exception to this is when a valid contract is in place prior to 24th February 2020, providing the appointment complies with KC Regulation F (1), 20.b.g. If you wish to be included in this new listing, you have until October 30th to submit your details to the Breed BEC: Carole Smedley using the following e mail: ca.antoc@btinternet.com

News of Yorkshire Collie Club Ch Show, with Secretary Christine Biggs at the helm and a new outdoor venue at the Sheffield Transport Sports Club ground, using the football pitch area. It would appear there was plenty of space for ring side parking for everyone. The entry was quite good, made up of 91 exhibits, some listed NFC but actually on the day quite a few absent (20+) for the judges of Terri Brand (Ronansprey) and a first time appointment for Denise Rowan (Rowancrest) very well known for her Shetland Sheepdogs. Rod Slater was listed for Referee and BIS whilst Angela Harvey (Wicani) had drawn a nice entry of Smooth Collies.

It was not long before results filtered through, courtesy of Jo White who sent me down the pages and other sources posted don social media and the full results on the YCC website along with a phone call from Duna Jones confirming some of the results – so many thanks to you all.

This was Terri’s second appointment for the breed, her first being at SKC in 2015. Interesting to see that her CC winner at SKC came out today as a veteran and took his Veteran Class, Ch Willowdene Double or Quits at Wassail, owned by Robin Blaikie who made a longer trip north from his new home near Aylesbury Bucks. He is sired by Rosschell Bobbee Dazzler at Wassail out of Wassail Dyna at Willowdene and this tri boy was born January 2012.

Melissa Lockyer took MP with her Gataj Out of The Woods and Best Puppy Dog and eventual BPIB.  Puppy was Monsolana Amore Boy Over Barrenclough for Lynda Boyle. Chantique Magical Mystery won Junior, beating the puppy dog winner. Paulaura No Where Man won Maiden for Charlene Turner; Tiganlea Task Master at Trenic won Graduate for Jean Singh whilst Robin and Kourika King Pin took PG. Limit was another nice win for Michelle McCann and Ollie, Oaklands Blue Style du Clos de Seawind at Zolkhan, who also took his 2nd CC. Open was won by the dual CC winning sable, Camanna Codename and he took home the RCC for Anne Hassock

This was a first CC appointment in Roughs for Denise, who had previously judged club open shows for both YCC and British. Her class winners included: Aneish Misty Blue of Siluto for the Whitakers and she was also BVB. Brian and Odile managed a day out and won Puppy with Beldones Magical Bliss (Roughrigg Rag n Bone Man ex Beldones Corradina). Erjon Ebony Jewels won her class for Josh and Duna. Gataj Honey Bee (Once Upon A Time du Clos de Sea-Wind ex Nasty Girl du Clos de Sea-Wind took Junior for Melissa. Maiden was won by Uffspring Ultravox, bred by Jane Spendelow and owned by Miss E Rose.

Starlyn Amazing Grace, (I Am Fantastic du Bois des Amazones ex Camanna Naomi Campbell) won Gradate for Cate Hollinshead.
Post Grad, quite a full class of 10 with 1 missing was won by Andre and Chantal Scott with Chantique Fairy Magic (Ch Magical Moon of Lowlands Green Valley for Chantique ex Chantique Fairy Dust.

Another good class, Limit, was won by Melissa and her Paradise Girl du Clos de Seawind for Gataj whilst Jayne Llewellyn’s journey from Merthyr Tydfil was rewarded when she took not only Open but the BCC, her first, with Salsina Share The Love, known at home as Ruby. Sired by Stonehaven Pride Golden Touch at Salsina out of Salsina Share A Dream. She is home bred and was born May 2018 and she ended up BOB and RBIS

Standing 2nd to her, was Beldones Enable, another sable, bred by Brian and Odile, sired by Ch Beldones Tom Wood out of Beldones Looks Like Fun and she took the RBCC, which I think, is first such big award.

Finally, whilst recording all the wins by dogs imported from abroad, I was looking at some of the results at the recent Finnish Kennel Club show, where on just one day, there were 167 Roughs entered. Interestingly both the RCC winners and the CC winner were sired by dogs either exported to Finland, or the discerning owners had made the trip over to the UK. So it works both ways, if you actually know your breeding lines and are prepared to make long journeys then winners will abound.
