Breed Notes
15th October
It was cold and damp on a Tuesday morning for Border Union Ch show, where we had another first time judge centre stage with an entry of approx 50. This the 24th show so far and quite a few more to come and some more first timers.
By the end of the day, we had a Ch gaining another CC, a dual CC winner collecting a RCC; a triple RCC winner collecting a 1st CC and another wining a 2nd rcc, however, like many of the shows recently the blue merles dominated in the awards.
The judge today was Cheryl Lockett, very well known in Shetland Sheepdogs and has the Cheryldene kennel. Cheryl is no newcomer to the breed, having been brought up by her late father, Derek and mother Doris.
Taking his 4th CC was the well known blue, Freddi, Ch Ingledene Mercury Rising owned by Val & John Geddes. Just in case you forgot, he is a son of Ch Extraordinary Blu di Cambiano out of Ch Ingledene Spirit of Ecstasy.
The RDCC went to Turner, (Tiganlea Turning Blue) who is obviously enjoying his holiday along with owners John & Caroline who have been staying in a lovely holiday cottage surrounded by sheep and hills! Thank you to John who let me know of their good day as Twist, the sable puppy also took BPD and eventual BPIB
Other class winners included, Hugo Boss In Black Della Verde Scozia (Imp Italy) for Daphne Iley and he won Graduate. Peter Savage and his Peblu Gold Reflection at Savataurus Ir Jun Ch won PG; both of these boys were alone in their classes.
It was a delighted Duna Jones who rang to tell me that her Bella, Erjon Evolving Star had finally broken her duck of RCC wins and taken her first CC from PG for her and Josh who had the honour of moving her for Duna
A great return to the ring for Porzia was reported by Tony & Daphne Iley. She won the RCC also from PG. This blue merle originally came from Italy and is shown in Daphne’s name. If I recall correctly she took the RBCC at Belfast in 2019 from Bill Browne-Cole. She is sired by Guarda Che Blue di Bella Della Verde Scozia out of Ultimate Result of Buddy In Black della Verde Scozia. Bred by D Lassini, she is known officially as Call Me A Dreamer in Blue for Ileyda Della Verde Scozia JW and was born in May 2018
Val Geddes won Junior with her blue, Ingledene Sno Angel, and I understand that Louise Walker made the journey down “solo” without the support of Margo and won Novice with their Beldones Just For Fun at Starlenga (Honky Tonk Man of River Tweed ex Beldones Looks Like Fun), bred by Brian and Odile, she then took BPIB
Limit was a nice win for Ingledene Nite’n’Gale, owned by Mrs L Yule from Aberdeenshire. She is sired by Ingledene Spirit of Legend out of Ingledene Nite Bird and bred by Val & John Geddes and was born in May 2018.
John & Caroline Tipper won Open with Tiganlea Too Good To Be True, born in 2017; she was attending her 3rd show as an adult. She is by Ch Tiganlea Too Good To Be Forgotten out of Hazelnut, whose remarkable record was mentioned last week.
BVIB went to another blue, Kynan Silvershadow at Rydellsky for Jane Rycraft, as I could not find any VB to compete it was an automatic win. He is sired by Ch Chelborn Kiss n Tell out of Wassail China Blue at Kynan and is bred by Dermot and Maureen Timmins from Ireland.
Although our breed stayed for the groups, supported by those who had also won, we did not feature but well done for staying in the weather conditions. I am sure the warmth of a car journey home did call – it is such a depressing situation as many of the Group Judges recently do not even consider looking at a Rough – we must do more to raise our breed profile.
With a few days rest, many attended the Ayrshire Collie Ch show at Geilsland Estate, Beith under the guidance of Secretary, Iren Buchanan Green heading the show. There have been a few issues surrounding the show, and just before the show, the replacement referee had to be replaced but, I don’t think that their services were required between the 2 judges.
These were Margaret Shipp, Tremaro, wife of Rob Shipp who normally handles all their dogs and this was her first ever Ch appointment and Brenda Cooney, Lingwell, one of our more established judges having officiated many times including Crufts 2015.
The entry, according to the catalogue was 81 with a few NFC included, the dog entry totalled approx 34 with, sadly, about 9 absent. Taking his 3rd CC was none other than local lad, Ollie, now to be known as Ch Oaklands Blue Style du Clos de Seawind at Zolkan for Michelle McCann from Kilmarnock. His first CC came from Anne Hassock at the recent Bournemouth, followed by a second from Terri Brand at Yorkshire CC along with a RCC from Andre Scott at London Collie. Bred in France by Giles Mervant. His sire is Hot Chocolate du Clos de Sea-Wind out of I have a Dream Blue du Clos de Sea-Wind and he was born February 2018.
Taking another RCC, standing 2nd to Ollie, was Turner and John Tipper, who very kindly rang with the news – thank you. Turner’s details are well known to us all.
Best Puppy Dog went to Melissa and Gataj Out of The Woods, and at the other end of the age scale, Foggy, Ch Tiganlea Too Good To Be Forgotten annexed another Veteran Dog Class for John & Caroline.
Now to the ladies, Brenda had around 46 entries with about 16 missing and her choice for the BCC had travelled over from Northern Ireland, in the form of Grenville Francis and his sable, now Ch Peblu Gold Desire. She won her 1st CC at Driffield in 2019 from Leslie Chalmers (Aintshe) followed by a 2nd at Belfast from Bill Browne-Cole. She is sired by Ballahana Boom or Bust at Peblu out of Chelborn Touch of Desire and she was born in September 2017 and she won Open. Winning Limit was another traveller from Ireland, this time Liam Kelly with Samhaven Sister Sara with Ballahana and this was her 2nd RCC this year, having taken her first at Blackpool from Sue Hawkins. She is sired by Honky Tonk Man of River Tweed out of Samhaven Zip Line (a daughter of Ch Samhaven Justin Time)
BPB went to Melissa with Gataj Good Time Girl and Jo Brooker had the thrill of winning Veteran with Telforth Sweet Dreams to Corisian JW. Sired by Ch Westoak Warlord out of Ch Amalie Lynmead Lucy Locket and she was born in July 2013.
I think both judges agreed on the in house awards which went to Ollie for BIS, RBIS to Grenville, Best Puppy to Melissa with her sable bitch puppy and BVIS to Jo Brooker. So the day ended with two new Champions, numbers 13 and 14. All the major winners parading in their lovely black and tartan show jackets, in memory of the late Bill McIntyre brought the show to a close and many packed up ready for the following day at Lancashire and Cheshire!
Apologies to all at Lancs & Cheshire, having received my annual Flu jab, this time it has laid me low and although I have received the main results from Julie Growcott and others, and an OD Deadline to meet, a more detailed report should appear next week.
Held at the Thompson House Equestrian Centre, Standish, under the guidance of show secretary Ray Wilkinson, the judges were Val Geddes (Dogs); Tony Iley for bitches, Derek Smith for Smooths and Referee and BIS Robin Newhouse.
From what I can gather, Vanessa Cronk had one of those days many of us dream of taking both dog and bitch CC’s and obviously BOB.
Val is one of our more established judges, and last judged at WKC in 2018. Her choice then was also a Skabona bred bitch. Today, for the CC was Vanessa and Int Ch Skabona The Gambler Imp Sweden. Bred by Bo and Natalia Skalin this is his 5th CC. To remind you he is sired by Zealot Gold Fantazjia out of Chelhaven Playing Around Chelborn (a daughter of Ch Kiss n Tell and Ch Coral Sand). Taking the RDCC was the Crufts 2020 rcc winning tricolour, Ir Ch Hawkfield’s Return to Sender to Joshren at Daliyhaa owned by Tom Wall and known as Elvis. (Although I did think he was previously in partnership with young Allan Walsh, son of John Walsh Jnr). He is sired by Ch Sunwind’s Hocus Pocus out of Hawkfield’s It Matters To Me and was born in April 2017 and bred by Satu Huvkainen from Finland. BPD went to Corydon Krug, owned by Miranda. BV was John Tipper with Ch Tiganlea Too Good to Be Forgotten.
Tony Iley is another of our regular judges and holds the Ileyda affix along with wife Daphne, he last judged at Ayrshire Collie in 2018. His choice for the BCC, her first, I think, was Chelborn Wish List. A sable, owned and bred by Vanessa Cronk, thus giving her the double.
Taking the RBCC, from PG was Jo Hodges and Jopium Loves To Sparkle with Meryctin, previously owned by the late Joan McIntyre. She is sired by Jealous Guy of Slatestone With Jopium (Imp Lux) out of Ch Jopium Love Heart, (who won the BCC when Tony last judged) and she was born October 2018. BPB went to Melissa and her Gataj Good Time Girl and making a telling re-appearance in the Veteran class was Ch Brilyn Platinum Lustre. Sired by Ch Chelborn Kiss n Tell out of Brilyn Silver Symphony she was born in August 2008, which makes her 13 years young.
More details on the In Show awards to follow.
