Lisa Burtenshaw, one half of the world famous Pelido collie kennel died following a long illness last weekend and our thoughts must go to husband Peter, son and all remaining family members Lisa, unless you knew her, appeared as a formidable woman, immaculate in her dress and makeup and, of course, the presentation of her charges, but she had a heart of gold and was a very genuine caring person. She started in dogs as a part-time kennel person to the world famous Treetops kennel of the late Judy de Casembroot just after Judy had won BIS at Crufts with Ch Treetops Golden Falcon so her grounding in all aspects of dogs could not have been better. Lisa met Peter and their first venture into exhibition was “Show Rabbits” but soon moved into dogs, Rough Collies, after the purchase of their first collie. She was Hunnycombe Saffron, soon to have the addition of Pelido to her name which was made up from the initials of Peter, Lisa and son Douglas. Sired by Antoc Knight Templar (a son of Ch A Vicar of Bray) out of a Ch Duntiblae Dogwatch daughter, Deloraine Lovely Day, bred by Audrey Smith. It was not long before the first Pelido homebred Champion emerged in the form of Ch Pelido Copper Beech, a stunning sable, sired by Leecroft Lover Boy of Dunsinane owned by the late Audrey Chatfield and a lifetime friendship also evolved between these two ladies. In all, there were 27 UK Champions at Pelido, numerous overseas winners and title holders. Pelido were Top Breeders in 1982/84/91 and 1994. Top Stud Dog/Top Brood Bitch in 1989/1991 and 2001. Her kennel of collies, based in Thursley, near Guildford, Surrey had some popular stud dogs including Ch Cathanbrae Polar Moon at Pelido who sired Champions both Rough and Smooth; Ch Pelido Double Fantasy, Ch Pelido Guilty to name a few. They also had Champions in both sexes and of all three colours and there was always a waiting list for future puppies. It was not too long before Lisa was judging at CC level and often joined by her husband Peter for appointments at both home and abroad, finally, both of them were given the honour of Crufts in 1994. Lisa is one a few who have both won at and judged at Crufts, with the last winner being Ch Pelido Italian Affair in 1998. In 1982 they had the honour of taking home the British BIS trophy with Ch Pelido Silver Lady and also did the double from the late Kath Jeffries and Alan Jeffries taking both CC’s at a Midland Collie Ch show and the Champions Parades at Club shows were often dominated by the Pelido entry, such was the dominance of the kennel. Lisa did not only judge Roughs but was approved for other breeds and also had Bearded Collies, with some success. She was given the opportunity to award the first set of CC’s, at Crufts in 2006, to Australian Shepherds, when they were first recognised, and her CC & BOB, Am Ch Caitland Isle Take A Chnce went on to win not only the Group but final BIS. Lisa worked tirelessly for the breed, serving on the Committee of West of England CS and was also Secretary of London & Provincial Collie Club for many years. Her last position was as President of the British Collie Club and we thank her for contribution to the world of collies. Carole Smedley ******************************************************************************* It was with great sadness & a tear in my eye that I read of the death of Lisa B. When we first became interested in R Collies in the late 1970's purchasing 2 bitches from the late Mike Harris "Mybern", one being a S/W full litter sister (did a lot of winning for a novice exhibitor) to CH Minstrel, & the other being a CH Drum Major at Dunsinane daughter (tri) which we decided to mate to CH Polar Moon (which Mike & Audrey though was a good idea). This being how I became friendly with Lisa, I did the long journey down to Surrey, she was very helpful (the mating was a success) she made me some dinner and said another mating in 2 days would be a good idea, & to help me and save another long journey she would keep "Wanda" bringing her up to Manchester (CH show) which was in 5 days time for me to collect outside the car park to take home. What a nice thing to do for me, a mere novice exhibitor. Six lovely puppies of which we kept "Savataurus's Dark Delight" - Sadie who had a very successful show career peaking when Audrey gave her the Res CC at SKC beating 75 bitches (the only bitch to beat her was Lynaire Dancing Girl made up on the day). On a sad note another long journey to Surrey to mate her to CH Alenzone's Blue Stratos at Pelido she got Pyometra (the vet saying she had 6 dead puppies inside her) he spayed her to save her life. She carried on winning getting her last BVIS at 13 but we lost our breeding line (CH Blue Stratos got his 3rd ticket when the puppies were due).
On a sad note I was one of only 3 Rough Collie people (Duna J & Sandra W being the other 2) at Audrey's funeral, a sad end for a great lady and personal friend of mine. It rained all day like today as well.
