Breed Notes

Before the full notes, mention must be made of the late Jean Lanning JP, to whom many tributes have already been made. Jean was a quite respected judge of our breed, having judged at Bath in 1999, West of England 2004, and both sexes at Blackpool in 2010 and her last appointment again at Blackpool in 2016. Her judging was quite consistent, with the Ingledene kennel prominent with: Rossavon Addicted To Love at Ingledene, Ingledene Late Nite Love, Black Gary La Dame Chere at Ingledene and Ingledene Spirits Arise all taking CC’s along with Ch Brooklynson from Rio and Passionate Embrace at Gemheid. She also awarded RCC’s to Ingledene Slave to Love, Myriehewe Ma Biche, Ingledene Legend In Black, Aqualita Dr No, Ingledene Miss U Nites and Wicani White Lace and Promises. A very interesting and outspoken character whose contributions, especially at the KC AGM’s will be sadly missed.

Next week there will be a full report on the Dual Ch shows held by London Collie, but by now you will all know the major winners – more details later

Who recalls shows held at the Corn Exchange Leeds? Well allow me to refresh some memories for you!

Back in 1966 (the year that England last won the World Cup for Football) Mrs. Margaret Franklin, MRCVS of the world famous Pattingham Collies judged at the Corn Exchange for Yorkshire Collie Club.

Secretary at that time was Jim Broderick (Shearcliffe); Chairman was Ron Cockcroft (Leecroft); with Harold Linley in the position of President. Miss Phil Grey (Ladypark) was listed as a Honary Life Member.

The show opened at 10am with judging at 12noon with Best In Show to be judged at 5pm before the show closed at 6pm.

The catalogue was a mere 2/6d with an admission fee of the same and an entry of 102 collies awaited judging

There were some real collie names in the entry, including Royal Ace of Rokeby (who won junior)  for Betty Eglin;  Clickam Silver Snowstar won his class and 2nd in Spl puppy dog for Derek Smith. Shirley Toothill had a new puppy in Aberhill Titanic Boy (Defiant of Dunsinane ex Alynda of Aberthorne)
Frank and Winnie Davies won both Graduate and Limit with Franwyns Dale (Chateroux Ideal ex Franwyns Jefsfire Harvest). Open was won by Mum, Aileen Speding with Ch Antoc Vicar of Bray (Ch Larkena Vanara Golden Victor ex Antoc Rose Marie) and he took the Dog CC with Phil Grey’s Legendry Prince of Ladypark (Ch Legend of Ladypark ex Locheve of Ladypark) taking both 2nd in Open and the RDCC.

Bitches were headed by Locharen Loretta of Ystap, owned by Frank & Lillian Mitchell and bred by Frank, Jane and husband Keith. If the name seems familiar, both Jane & Keith are still very active in Shetland Sheepdogs today! She was sired by Ch Pattingham Pacemaker out of Leading Lady of Glenmist and she won Limit, Open and Special Sable/White classes and went, I think BOB and BIS.

There were also many “names” showing including, Jim Broderick (Shearcliffe) Audrey Chatfield (Dunsinane); Diana “Duntiblae” Cochrane; Iris Combe (Tilehouse); Gordon & Thelma Duncan (Brettonpark); Betty Eglin (Rokeby); Vera Hickson with Ch Bririch Silver Dream; Norma Lister with Abbestone Delecta of Dunsinane; Kitty Lyver had entered Lestine of Lochmore and Alex North (Silvafox) also had 2 entries. Mrs Pope had entered Gildercroft Gertrude along with Des Rippon who had Ch Mywicks Satine of Simbastar. Joyce Skillbeck had Albergo of Aberthorne along with Joan Sykes and a young Sykeslaw Aristocrat.  Sandra and Jack had Jefsfire Fashionette in special puppy to name but a few!
