Breed Notes Cast your minds back a few years and maybe some of you will recall the great days of Irish Collie Club! Especially in 1988 when the late Jimmy Tait (Aberthorne) drew a great entry of 104 making 187 entries, all attending their first Ch show at the Blue Circle Social Centre, Larne. The Irish Collie was founded in 1892 and the Officers were listed as: President, Mr Bob Adamson who was 82 years young and he received a special presentation of Tyrone Crystal for his long and outstanding service to both the Club and the Breed.
Mr McDowell held the post of Chairman, with Mr Semple as Vice Chair. Robert Gow was Secretary and Treasurer. Robert Gow had already served the Club for many years and he too received a gift for all his work and returning to the post following the very difficult times for the Club after the Le Mon House bombing in 1978 Other Committee members included, Mrs K Houston, Mr H Reid, Mr K Smith, Mr R Moore, Mr A Patton and , Miss V Edgar Prize Money of £2, £1, 50p and 25p along with rosettes 1st to VHC in all of the 24 scheduled classes along with a long list of Trophies, some of which were won outright if a member. Membership was just £1 single and £2 joint. I found a fully marked catalogue, along with Jimmy’s show report and what interesting reading it is to read the comments made by Jimmy Tait in his show critique and should anyone wish a copy of this, please do contact me and I will forward. Jean Brown’s Stronvar Silent Warrior took both MP and Puppy well filled classes. He later went on to claim his UK title. Sired by John Cairney at Invermark out of Mybern’s Miranda at Stronvar. 11 junior males competed, with Edditch Sam Whisky taking the class for Roy Foxcroft. Sired by Ch Lynway Sandknocker out of Edditch Foxy Lady. Anne Hassock and her two entries, Can This Be Me at Camanna and Camanna Chicken George both won their respective classes and they two also went in to win titles. Sycloft Sorcerer, owned and bred by the late Sylvia Pinchbeck won PG and the Dog CC. A tricolour sired by Brettonpark Keep It Dark out of Sylcroft Santa Fay, he too gained his UK title. Winning a lovely Open class of 14 was Sanside Spartan Hero, for Martin Beechum. A sable by Ch Mybern Mandane ex Sanside Sweet Pretender and he took home the RDCC. Iris and the late Rob Cummings held the flag up for the home country when they won MP with Jasand Jus Jenny at Altnareagh (Ch Jasand Master Ziggy ex Strolester Mis’Understood at Jasand) Puppy was won by Brian Hawkins with Brilyn Musical Mystery (Ch Supertramp ex Beechmere Musical Joy for Brilyn) and she went on to win 2 more classes and 2nd in a strong Junior Class to Rubec Snow Symphony (Ch Rubec Blue Peter ex Sangreat Snow Sapphire of Rubec). Owned and shown by Marie Magill, she too gained her UK title. The late Jasmine Round took Limit, with the dam of the MP, Strolester Mis’Understood at Jasand (Ch Jasand Young Winston ex Needor Mischief Melody) Open Bitch, a hotly contested class of 11, had Westoak Gypsy winning, not only this but her UK crown for Terry McGowan. She was sired by Brettonpark Country Tweed out of Jamesfair Mystic Lady). Standing 2nd in Open was Edditch Foxy Lady; another owned and bred by Roy Foxcroft. Sired by Ch Aberthorne Arrester out of Lucky Lady at Edditch. The last breed class of the day was a mixed Veteran class of 5, won by the male, Ir Ch Kerrievonne Ebony Calypso owned and bred by Yvonne Kelly from Bangor NI. Sired by Ir Ch Rokeby Rorty of Cregagh out of Ingledene Black is Beautiful Finally, ICC scheduled 3 colour classes with Westoak Gypsy winning Best S/W; Camanna Chicken George for the Tricolours and Rubec Snow Symphony the blue merle winner. Other names listed in the show catalogue bring so many memories back and also it is interesting to note that some are still active to this day, including Paul Battigan (Roclynn); Robin Blaikie (Kourika); John Congdon (Aaronwell); Grenville Francis (Peblu) and Duna Jones (Erjon) and we were all a few years younger then!!
