REVIEW 2019 – COLLIE ROUGH

Part 1 - Part 2

A very interesting show year with the addition of 5 extra CC’s on offer for our breed, and although the total number of entries for the year amounted to approx 3,400 (3,015 in 2018) the average show entry fell from last years 88 to only 87 for this year
Of course, some shows had exceptionally higher entries than others, Crufts with 258, followed by many of our major club shows, 8 of whom had entries over the 100, which goes to show that exhibitors are perhaps a little more supportive of a club show against some of the All Breed Ch show.

Rotation still is in existence until the KC review the situation, which currently means 13 of 14 Breed Clubs have continued CC Status and this year, 2019, it was the turn of WECS to lose CC’s. This club decided to hold a BAD (Breed Appreciation Day) which was very well supported. Other clubs, CCW & MCC, along with YCC  do have plans for BAD Days in 2020, so watch this space and if you are interested in the breed or wish to progress up the ladder, attendance at these events could be advantageous. If you have any questions concerning this, please contact your BEC – who is Carole Smedley. Contact details are ca.antoc@btinternet.com or drop me a message on 01425.672424.

Some Breed Clubs have had changes through this year with new Secretarial posts and to all of these, we wish you all success. Being a member of a show committee has many advantages and to some, who appear to comment that they do not have the time to attend meetings, please think again, as many clubs are taking the advantage of social media and conducting some club business via this media.

Talking of social media, it does have both advantages and disadvantages. One disadvantage is that any club or council business should be confined to them and not discussed openly. Another being the statements made regarding both people and dogs, maybe by possibly disgruntled exhibitors. The KC has very sensible guide lines and a quick read of these would be advantageous to all.

On the plus side, the reporting of results “as they happen” is wonderful and I have to say a very big thank you to Julie Growcott and her loyal band of roving reporters who send in information to allow those not attending the show to see results quicker. Mistakes can be made but do remember that this is a “Free Service” provided and unless you are prepared to help out please accept that until a correctly marked catalogue is received, errors will be made.

Having said this, another social media advantage, especially with our inclement weather and many exhibitors setting off to shows at “silly o’clock” any disruption be it traffic issues or judge changes are widely reported giving us more information prior to the event.

The KC introduced some new awards to promote attendance at Open shows, one of these was the Show Certificate of Excellence and one of the first winners of this was the blue merle, Mejola Fate and Fortune, owned by Jo White. Another new award was the Veteran Warrant, also obtained from Open show wins and Nikal It’s Gud to Be Black now holds one of these for Shelley Skinner. Many congratulations to both exhibitors for promoting our breed at this level.

With the outcome of the JCF Review still to be determined, how the KC and Clubs will promote new judges for our breed is still on hold. Currently we have approx over 250 judges listed with full approval with just 39 shows from which judges are selected. The majority of General Ch Shows only have one judge, with Crufts being an exception. Club shows of which there are 14 (currently rotation still exists, so 13 annually) still appoint two judges. Therefore a very quick calculation will show that the minimum number of judges required per year, is 26 for the 13 clubs and 26 for the General Ch shows making a total of 52, this means if the number of judges remained the same it would mean that a judge would officiate once every 5 years! This is of course, not taking into consideration ages.

2019 saw 9 new judges gaining approvals, 7 of which would be classed as Breed Specialists, including a new husband and wife duo, some only officiating over one sex, this left 2 “Non Breed Specialists” officiating for the first time. For 2020 we have even more listed, some of whom have never had the fortune to receive a big green card and the first time they actually hold one is prior to awarding it in the ring!

We did not feature so well in the Groups this year but did manage a Puppy Group 2 for Serenlas No Ordinary Blue for Ingledene at Manchester, now with CC status and an Adult G3 place at SWKA (No CC’s) for Ch Ingledene Spirit of Ecstasy although there were a few short-listed throughout the year. However there were also a few Group Absentee’s which is sad for our breed, as it does show us in a poor light ,especially when we are all trying to improve our breed image. It also can reflect on the judge.

Before I give a detailed report, although the influence of dogs coming in to the UK from abroad is increasing, it is interesting to note that all the 11 new Champions for this year are all home bred from established breeder/exhibitors and although many imports did win well.
